We just think it needs to be re- reinterpreted or understood.

And so people like Billy Graham and the National Association of Evangelicals, the Southern Baptists, they try to have a more moderate stance, but it was still based on rationalism, it was still based on rejection of miracles for today, by and large, and so forth.

Okay.

What you need to understand is, and 1910 could be the official demarcation of the fundamentalist movement.

Theologically, you were going to be grounded in an epistemology, a kind of reformed epistemology that would really substantiate and develop the doctrine of biblical inerrancy and biblical authority.

Historically, you were going to get grounded in the Reformation and the evangelical revivals and modern evangelicalism, the National Association of Evangelicals.

Missiologically, you know, there's a huge emphasis on missions in the school and taking that evangelical worldview literally to the world and reaching out to the four corners of the globe and so forth.

So it was an intellectually vibrant and very engaged and mission-oriented school.

Evangelicals wanted to make common cause with anybody who had the experience of new birth in Christ, regardless of their ecclesiology or politics.

So the National Association of Evangelicals, which was born in the 1940s, for example, is very explicit about this, and that's led to an attitude, kind of an ideology of denominationalism.

Namely, it doesn't really matter what denomination you belong to as long as you have that new birth and relationship with Jesus.

Nothing could be farther from traditional reform thought.

It was sponsored by an evangelical organization called the International Bible Society, since rebranded as Biblica, which still holds the copyright to this day.

The NIV's translators represented several different evangelical denominations, and were recruited from evangelical seminaries, universities, and organizations like the National Association of Evangelicals.

Like the ESV, the NIV explicitly was designed to appeal to a conservative Protestant audience, though this was not a secret.

The translators shared their doctrinal commitments in copies of the NIV itself.

Evangelicals, we didn't ask them what they consider themselves or call themselves.

We looked at the definition, we use the definition that is used by the National Association of Evangelicals, and that is strong agreement with four different theological viewpoints, ranging from salvation by grace alone through Jesus Christ to the primacy of the Bible, the importance of sharing faith with others, And so this is people who have evangelical beliefs, not who call themselves evangelicals.

But then when we're talking about the report card they gave themselves, I don't even call that self-identification.

I would call that self-analysis.

Even religious institutions that were previously staunch supporters of the death penalty have changed their positions.

In October of 2015, the National Association of Evangelicals, an umbrella group for congregations representing millions of evangelical Christians in the United States, announced a new resolution that changes its 1973 resolution that favored the death penalty, recognizing that a growing number of evangelicals now call for a shift away from the death penalty.

This was a change from its prior position that favored the death penalty.

On October 20th, 2022, the leader of the Orthodox Church stated in an interview, the attitude of a society toward the death penalty is an indicator of its cultural orientation and consideration of human dignity.
