Murdoch Children's Research Institute

What if researchers could build a human heart valve in the lab and use it to understand how heart valve disease develops? Well, that's exactly what researchers at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute have been working towards.

Using pluripotent stem cells, which are essentially blank cells that can be trained to become many different types of cells in the body, the team has created three-dimensional, valve-like human tissue that more closely replicates the structure of a real heart valve.

And they've also used the model to recreate aspects of inflammatory valve disease, opening up new possibilities for studying the disease and testing potential treatments.

Derek McCormick is the director of the Raising Children Network.

He's an honorary fellow at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute, otherwise known as the MCRI.

He has a, a science communication background, spent more than 20 years now at the PRC, the Parenting Research Center.
