So what did you think about that? Do you think Vail should, could, would, will end up parting with Park City? And do you think that Matthew Prince would be a good next owner? Or would you like to see something else happen entirely? Or would you like to see Vail keep it? Let's get some quick reader feedback.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
59:49
This one is from Steve Rapp on the pod with Mountain Creek General Manager Evan Kovac last week.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
59:57
Steven said, you did it again, Stu.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
59:59
I keep swearing I'm not going to write again.
DanHOST
14:05
...
DanHOST
14:05
I have a history with pre-ride because I, pre-ride for suckers just came about because at Mountain Creek, w- we did a pre-ride-
SageHOST
14:11
You know? Yes
DanHOST
14:12
... and I sent it and crashed, yeah.

25 MINS LATER

DanHOST
39:40
So but not a ton of drops.
DanHOST
39:42
Definitely not a place where you're gonna get to...
DanHOST
39:44
Like at Mountain Creek, we know there's three or four really big drops that we're always looking to hit every, every time we go, and they're full commitment, huge drops.
SageHOST
39:53
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
41:14
It's big snow.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
41:15
It's Mountain Creek.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
41:16
Then you go up Bel Air, Gore, Whiteface.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
41:18
What's your take on snow pass and the potential here?
Chris HaggertyGUEST
8:32
But I knew there was something there that I liked.
Chris HaggertyGUEST
8:35
Fast forward to high school, college years, and I got my first job at Mountain Creek Water Park, which is also in New Jersey and has a ski resort, Mountain Creek Resort.
Chris HaggertyGUEST
8:47
and got a job there as a lifeguard, lift operator in the winter, started snowboarding.
Chris HaggertyGUEST
8:54
And I think that's kind of when I got hooked on like, oh, this is really cool.
Chris HaggertyGUEST
9:30
Um, wasn't the right time for me to stay in Colorado though.
Chris HaggertyGUEST
9:33
I ended up going back to New Jersey and that's kind of when I started to like get serious about my career in the ski industry.
Chris HaggertyGUEST
9:40
Um, so basically at Mountain Creek, I did, you know, every frontline position you could think of started to move up into supervisor's position, manager positions, uh, ultimately became a general manager, um, there then went through a personal, uh, transformation period where uh had to address something that was holding me back in life which was um my relationship with alcohol um and i decided to uh move on from move on from from alcohol rid that from my from my life um and since then i've uh i've worked at another resort that was local to sussex county which was more focused on like lodging weddings golfers golf uh Um, Gulf forces.
Chris HaggertyGUEST
10:24
And then I was like, I got to get back in the ski industry and I got to do it in Colorado.
Stuart WinchesterHOST

I have some breaking news, which I will get to in a moment, from Alterra Mountain Company.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
0:32
Separately, we will focus on Mountain Creek, New Jersey, one of the most underrated mountains in the country, in my opinion.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
0:39
First, though, let's get to some breaking news.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
0:41
In March, Alterra Mountain Company said goodbye to Jared Smith, its CEO since 2022.

11 MINS LATER

Stuart WinchesterHOST
12:15
All right.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
12:16
Looks like we have Evan in the queue, so let's get to Evan now.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
12:22
My guest today has been general manager of Mountain Creek, New Jersey since 2020.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
12:28
Mountain Creek spans more than two miles along four peaks, served by nine lifts.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
6:02
who live in New Jersey.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
6:03
And I'm like, do you have a mountain Creek pass? They're like, no, why would I ski there? I ski out West.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
6:06
I'm like, well, Right.
Stuart WinchesterHOST
6:08
It's not, you know, Jackson Hole, but it has a thousand vertical feet and high speed lifts.

33 MINS LATER

Stuart WinchesterHOST
39:15
I'll call them, but just talk about those passes and snow operating and why, because I imagine you could have joined Indy pass years ago, but, but why was, why, why did you finally go with snow operating?
Jay DoughertyGUEST
39:27
So we've had a great relationship with snow operating.
Jay DoughertyGUEST
39:29
Obviously we're a little later in the ball game with the turning base learning, but we've had such good success with them and such a positive relationship with whole group um that it was kind of like the natural choice for us to go with them yeah um last year yeah we were on the uh the triple play which was kind of the product that came out of something they were doing on mountain creek for a number of years and you know thinking about it when you approached us with the idea it was like yeah we'd love to attract new folks and like we share a similar demographic it goes out to them they can go with us out of the city or for that And it just made sense, you know, and we did see a value last year in bringing new people to Southernton.
Jay DoughertyGUEST
40:17
And I'm sure they saw a value with people in our general area buying that pastage for their mountains.
Brian EberhardtGUEST
3:59
I asked them, "Hey, can we, uh, give you any profits we make from this?" They were extremely happy, and we needed a little bit of logistic support.
Brian EberhardtGUEST
4:07
Uh, Kat over at Mountain Creek jumped on board.
Brian EberhardtGUEST
4:11
Uh, she's been absolutely wonderful helping us get this off the ground, and it's been a real community lift.
Brian EberhardtGUEST
4:19
So we're, we're hoping this shakes out to be a, a really fun event for everyone.
Brian EberhardtGUEST
8:19
I mean, I, I honestly think rope tow is one of the best ski instructors you could ever have.
BrownskiHOST
8:24
Yeah.
Brian EberhardtGUEST
8:24
Um, but I got, I got my first turns in there, and then primary skied Mountain Creek, Vernon Valley, um, out in Shawnee.
Brian EberhardtGUEST
8:34
I got all my cousins' hand-me-downs, so I had those like neon pink, you know, thick s- uh, synthetic snow pants.
Jason SchroederHOST
14:25
You know, just to drop the energy.
Dakota NortonPANELIST
14:27
But, uh, Sprinter's, my Sprinter, I don't know, like, after Mountain Creek, I got home, and it, dude, there was some noise coming out of, like, the whole pulley, uh, belt.
Dakota NortonPANELIST
14:35
I don't know.
Dakota NortonPANELIST
14:35
It was making noise.
BrownskiHOST
16:36
You know, he was kind of like making the case that he doesn't think that we need multi-passes.
BrownskiHOST
16:41
And he was almost implying that the Indy Pass is unnecessary because, you know, like his hill, Mountain Creek, he, of course, for anybody that doesn't remember, is the owner-operator of Mountain Creek and Big Snow, you know, the mall operation in New Jersey.
BrownskiHOST
16:58
And...
BrownskiHOST
17:00
he set up a bunch of mutual agreements and then as a kind of an extension of the mutual agreements, he created the triple play last year where you can buy, you know, I forget why, you know, depending on the, when you buy it, it's going to be between 170, I think, and 200 bucks.
BrownskiHOST
17:19
And you get to use, use it at, you know, a bunch of different mountains, you know, You know, Mountain Creek, Platic Hill, the Orta Hills were on it last year, a few others.
BrownskiHOST
17:29
Now he has the Snow Pass, which is, you know, he would say it's just an extension of the cooperative agreements.
BrownskiHOST
17:37
And he was kind of making the case that he wants it to someday go away and all the hills can just have cooperative agreements again, where you go, you get a few, you know, a season pass holder from Mountain Creek gets a couple of days at Platic Hill and wherever else.
BrownskiHOST
17:53
And these, you know, it's not like that.
