Massey Energy

Add some Mitch in there and you get the classic film Arsenic and Old Face.

Anyway, the 2000 Massey Energy coal slurry spill is considered one of the largest industrial spills in US history.

People in Martin County today still don't trust the drinking water.

The immediate aftermath of the spill happened to coincide with the incoming Bush administration, and so Elaine Chao was put in charge of overseeing the ongoing investigation into the spill.

Chao proceeded to fill her office with former McConnell staffers before pulling the plug on the investigation into Massey Energy, settling for a light fine of $5,600 for doing Captain Planet crimes.

During his tenure as Senate fundraiser, McConnell pulled nearly $600,000 in contributions from the coal industry at large.

As the coal investigation was still pending, Massey Energy wrote a check to the National Republican Senatorial Committee for 100,000 big ones.

A real sludge fund.
