ShenHOST

And it's like, it's very, I don't want to say visual novel-y.
ShenHOST
29:38
I think if you're familiar with like interactive fiction games and things like that, this was built on the Inkle engine, which was fun for me personally, because I got to do some stuff in ink markup earlier this year.
ShenHOST
29:48
And I was like, oh, hey, someone made a game with this attached to it.
ShenHOST
29:52
So it's very reading heavy.

ShenHOST
44:45
You're in the story, you know, because literally the whole thing is text, right?
JoeHOST
44:50
Yeah.
JoeHOST
44:51
I mean, Inkle are very good at the UX as well, because they put it all on a narrow panel and you don't have too much text on there at once, so it never feels like you're reading as much as you are.
JoeHOST
45:00
I mean, I used to play on a mobile phone and it just felt not as text heavy.
Steven LakeHOST
14:10
Yeah.
Steven LakeHOST
14:13
John Ingold and Joseph Humphrey from Inkle Studios.
Steven LakeHOST
14:17
They've been very generous at the time.
Steven LakeHOST
14:20
I actually went and interviewed them in person for a proper setup for a documentary, a short documentary on their studio, which I've still yet to put together and release.
Brad GallawayHOST
50:15
So I think it's great if you like, you know, like the Groundhog Day, the time loop and investigative games.
Brad GallawayHOST
50:21
It kind of reminds me of some of like Inkle's time games, that one where that lady was on the boat or the one where they had the girl at the boarding school.
Brad GallawayHOST
50:28
I forget what they're called, but like the time loop games where you're investigating those things.
Brad GallawayHOST
50:32
There's other time loop games as well where you kind of do a similar thing.
Kay RossHOST
29:15
I don't know if there's a place for them to do that, to kind of be a competitor or to be an alternative, like, ankle competitor.
Kay RossHOST
29:24
which is similar to what you're talking about, you know, both Inkle as a developer and as a publisher, but also working in a set of tools that they've exposed, you know, for other people to, you know, to make stuff in for like interactive fiction, you know, 80 days style things.
Kay RossHOST
29:43
Yeah.
Kay RossHOST
29:45
Yeah.
Steven LakeHOST

Hi there, my name is Stephen Lake and welcome to The Examined Game.
Steven LakeHOST
0:41
Today I am talking with John Ingold, the co-founder of Inkle Studios.
Steven LakeHOST
0:45
They've made some brilliant games including 80 Days, Heaven's Vault, TR-49, Expelled, Overboard.
Steven LakeHOST
0:51
These brilliant, beautiful games are very story driven.

Jon IngoldGUEST
46:29
If you can't do Macbeth where you are Macbeth and you have to kill people and it isn't going to work out, then can we only tell narratives which have happy endings? That doesn't seem right to me.
Jon IngoldGUEST
46:44
yeah somehow it's it's about making sure that the player knows that like okay all right in this game you're going to try and seize the throne and you're going to murder everyone in the way and you're going to lose all your friends in the process but it doesn't mean you're a bad person okay just so that you know this is not about you um yeah really difficult challenge but i i find it a really interesting challenge to think about as well and like Yeah.
Jon IngoldGUEST
47:09
How do you design the setup of the game so that people get that? Because I look back at the things that Inkle had done and like, you know, Overboard is a game where you're a murderess.
Jon IngoldGUEST
47:17
And as it turns out, the more that you play the game, the more that you realize the husband you've murdered is like a proto-fascist and he's actually, no one's going to miss him and it's kind of okay.
Kae RossHOST
29:15
I don't know if there's a place for them to do that, to kind of be a competitor or to be an alternative, like, ankle competitor.

Yeah.
