Jake CourtneyHOST
6:51
And then the third here was something maybe we're a little bit more familiar with, is the internet.
Jake CourtneyHOST
6:56
Robert Metcalfe, who is the inventor of Ethernet, like the Ethernet cables, wrote an article for InfoWorld in December 1995 in which he predicted, "I predict the internet will soon go spectacularly supernova and in, in 1996 catastrophically collapse." So he predicted [chuckles] that the internet would collapse in 1996.
Jake CourtneyHOST
7:22
And this is somebody that's on the inside, very much like Jacob Kotzen and Evan Hubinger, which somebody that probably ate, slept, and breathed internet and technology advances and engineering and everything that is involved in advancing that technology on the inside goes and says, "Hey, this is gonna be a catastrophic collapse of the internet.
Jake CourtneyHOST
7:44
We should all be warned." Tracing this back to what's going on today, in my opinion, this is not anything new in terms of what could happen.

Bobby CapucciHOST

I don't know if he physically transported them or if he just told them where to show up, Wallace told the outlet.
Bobby CapucciHOST
23:21
Robert X. Cringley, who wrote a popular computer gossip column for InfoWorld, told Insider that Gates was allegedly often inebriated at tech events and after parties and that he got drunk pretty easily.
Bobby CapucciHOST
23:35
So not only are you a douche, you're a lightweight.
Bobby CapucciHOST
23:38
Stop drinking.
Jonathan WeberGUEST
8:08
And at the same time, Pat McGovern, who owned a trade publishing empire called International Data Group, and they had...
Jonathan WeberGUEST
8:15
So Info World and PC World, all the worlds belong to IDG.
Jonathan WeberGUEST
8:20
And so he wanted basically to create Internet World.
Jonathan WeberGUEST
8:23
He wanted a trade publication about the Internet.
Jonathan WeberGUEST
8:17
And, uh, he was kind of looking for a way to do, make that idea happen.
Jonathan WeberGUEST
8:23
And at the same time, Pat McGovern, who owned a, a trade publishing empire called International Data Group, and they had, so InfoWorld and PCWorld, all the worlds belong to IDG.
Jonathan WeberGUEST
8:34
And, um, so he wanted basically to create Internetworld.
John MarkoffMODERATOR
8:38
Yeah.
John MarkoffMODERATOR
10:05
Yeah, yeah.
John MarkoffMODERATOR
10:05
Pat McGovern rode through three of these transitions at least.
John MarkoffMODERATOR
10:08
I mean, I, I was the middle transition, which was called InfoWorld.
Jonathan WeberGUEST
10:11
[laughs]
Gary ArndtHOST
11:36
He said, quote, "Almost all of the many predictions now being made about 1996 hinge on the Internet's continuing exponential growth.
Gary ArndtHOST
11:44
But I predict the Internet, which only just recently got this section here on InfoWorld, will soon go spectacularly supernova and in 1996 catastrophically collapse." End quote.
Gary ArndtHOST
11:57
Of course, the collapse of the Internet did not occur in 1996, nor in any year thereafter.
Gary ArndtHOST
12:03
Metcalfe was a good sport about being wrong.
