Album Club Pack October 2026: Damnation Special
P

Like, they were bleaker and, and, and starker, whereas this is an album, I think, that, uh, the, the post-rock obsessives, like people who mainly listen to Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky and stuff, they tend to love and obsess over Cult of Luna as much as, like, the sludge metalheads do, which is maybe who Neurosis more belong to.
P
18:50Perran HelyesHOST
Um, you get the, the intro of "March into the Heartbeats," which has this particular mix of, like, guitar effects and amp drones and gentle keys and drawn-out whispered mumbled vocals and stuff, and it's way closer in tone to, you know, like Mogwai than it is the, you know, Hydra Head or, like, Relapse stuff that was going on.
P
19:07Perran HelyesHOST
It's a sound that just, like, reeks of early 2000s internet message boards, [laughs] you know what I mean? But a really loving sense.
P
19:14Perran HelyesHOST
Um, and then you reach "Finland," which is, uh, one of Cult of Luna's probably bigger songs.
Stephen Brodsky (Cave In, Mutoid Man) Talks The Difference Between Independent And Major Labels
C
0:06Chris WrennHOST
Uh, you might know him from his many projects like Cave In or Mutoid Man or Old Man Gloom.
C
0:12Chris WrennHOST
Uh, but we really get into kind of, you know, where he was in high school and, and his group of friends and what they were creating and how elements of that continue on to this day, um, in the community that he's found, whether it's working with independent labels like Hydra Head, uh, or doing a major label release, uh, like they did back in 2003 with Antenna.
C
0:31Chris WrennHOST
Um, but yeah, we dig into it.
C
0:33Chris WrennHOST
We're excited to, uh, have a good chat, and, uh, appreciate you being here, so thank you.

Mastodon Top Tracks
S

It is, I suppose you'd just sort of have to go, "They're a bit like those bands that were around at that time." And if you knew, you sort of knew, like, I guess e- early Isis.
S
11:55Stephen HillGUEST
Like, do you remember a band from Switzerland, Knut, who were on Hydra Head? Um-

Oh, yeah.

The Road to Saddest Day: Ep. 03 w/ Stephen Brodsky: The History of Cave In Pt. 2
S
3:39Stephen BrodskyGUEST
I know it was hard for Caleb to kind of like ramp up to want to do stuff, knowing that like the end result would be like, okay, if we follow through now, we got to figure out who we're recording with and who's going to put this record out.
S
3:56Stephen BrodskyGUEST
Because at that point, Hydra head was pretty much dissolved.
S
4:00Stephen BrodskyGUEST
You know, we're talking 2017, like late 2017.
S
4:01Stephen BrodskyGUEST
Um, And I know he just kind of struggled with that whole thing because he was very rooted in family life and I don't know, not really wanting to be on the road as much.
7 MINS LATER
S
11:22Stephen BrodskyGUEST
So I don't know.
S
11:23Stephen BrodskyGUEST
That was an interesting moment.
S
11:24Stephen BrodskyGUEST
Kind of like one of those unsaid connections that just happens, you know, when you're working with your buddies on music, you know? But yeah, I think finishing the record, like, well, first of all, when Aaron was on board to do another Hydra head release, that was huge because it was like, okay, well, That's added reassurance that what we're doing is OK and it's right and he's supportive of it.
S
11:55Stephen BrodskyGUEST
So and then it became like, well, how can we help the family? And so we decided that we were going to basically put half the proceeds of that record to the Schofield family and I think the two things combined there, like the Hydra head element and the contribution to the family element, just gave the whole thing a sense of meaning and purpose that we'd never experienced before.
