Hospital Employees' Union

In 1944, the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada chartered Federal Labor Union 180 at Vancouver General Hospital.

This is the beginning of the Hospital Employees Union of British Columbia, now the province's largest health care union and a division of CUPE.

1976 saw Air Traffic Control Assistants, who were members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, start a one-week countrywide wildcat strike over work classification.

Also in 1976, the Canadian Labour Congress organized Canada's first countrywide general strike when one million workers joined a day of protest against the federal government's wage controls policy.
