Heart Machine

We’re a Los Angeles-based game studio dedicated to building games with engaging stories in beautiful, vibrant worlds. Our focus is gameplay that’s engaging, fluid and fun. We created the award-winning game Hyper Light Drifter and are working on the upcoming title Solar Ash. https://twitter.com/heartmachineHQ http://instagram.com/heartmachineHQ As a studio, we’re immensely excited to be creating things we love every day. Although we are all passionate and work incredibly hard, our studio is not a crunch-factory - we like to live our lives, have holidays, and remain healthy throughout a project. We’re supportive of a diverse working environment - different life perspectives offer a lot to building a better game, studio and understanding of one another. We’re looking for talented, motivated, smart, highly communicative, diverse and just plain good people to become part of our crew, to collaborate, shape and build something ambitious and unique.www.heartmachine.com

...
Danny O'DwyerHOST
96:12
I worked closely with on our Heart Machine, uh, series.
Danny O'DwyerHOST
96:15
And I feel like I should also mention, um, uh, my thoughts go out to everyone at Heart Machine.
Danny O'DwyerHOST
96:21
Alex Preston put out a, um, a post a number of days ago saying that the studio was basically laying everyone off, and they were worried about the future of the, you know, what Heart Machine could be in the future.
Danny O'DwyerHOST
96:34
Um, I think people understand that we were embedded for the Hyper Light, uh, Breaker stuff, and that at a certain point, it became quite difficult to continue that series because to do so would require us to talk to people who had been left off in previous, um, let go in previous, uh, uh, layoffs.
Danny O'DwyerHOST
96:53
And, you know, when you're doing this type of work, it's, it's not...
Danny O'DwyerHOST
99:01
Perhaps a more brave filmmaker would, would take a swing at some of this stuff, but Um, you know, I've, uh, I've, I've, I've stre- I've stretched myself where I've needed to with stuff like Door Fortress and, and, you know, Disco to a certain extent, and lots of stuff we've worked on in the past, like, uh, Astroneer, uh, Jeremy.
Danny O'DwyerHOST
99:18
We did all that stuff.
Scott ClarkHOST
15:57
We got some updates there.
Scott ClarkHOST
15:59
Developer Heart Machine has all but closed its doors.
Scott ClarkHOST
16:02
Build a Rocket Boys Bizarre Saga approaches its end.
Scott ClarkHOST
16:05
And Grand Theft Auto 6 is getting a soundtrack on physical media.

6 MINS LATER

Scott ClarkHOST
22:33
i'll buy a physical version you gotta jake just got really excited for a second
Jacob GundersonHOST
22:37
i'll be right back i'll be right back
Scott ClarkHOST
22:38
all right well i'm going to talk about my story while jake runs to get whatever collectible he wants to show off Heart Machine is the studio that is most famous for the game Hyper Light Drifter, which I have purchased.
Scott ClarkHOST
22:53
Never played it.
James FarleyHOST
33:04
So that appears to be happening.
James FarleyHOST
33:06
Also, Heart Machine appear to have laid off the majority of their staff of Hyper Light Drifter, which is, yeah, sort of a shame.
James FarleyHOST
33:14
And also, and then just after we recorded, I think it was, IGN also have laid off like multiple departments and a lot of people that have been there for quite a long time have also been let go at this stage, which is, yeah, awful.
James FarleyHOST
33:29
basically
Sean BellHOST
33:29
yeah I mean the IGN one it's like guys if you're not making money at this point you fucking own everything now yeah I don't
James FarleyHOST
33:39
know
Sean BellHOST
33:39
it's just bizarre like the the heart machine stuff It's obviously heartbreaking because, you know, huge Hyper Light Drifter fan, but obviously being completely honest, they've never quite recaptured that.
Sean BellHOST
33:55
Solar Ash was very good, but it wasn't the same sort of thing.
Dan HHOST
2:39
Because what, what I've been thinking about this story and okay, I guess the fact that it's the first game probably makes the impact bigger, but we are in a time now of such fine margins where a failed game is, can pull down the studio whereas before you know companies used to churn games out all the times you know on cheaper so i guess this is just a sign of the times that you really can't afford to to have a failed game it's it's it's real trial by trial by fire now
Dan HHOST
3:09
yeah absolutely uh and and build a rocket boy that you lay that along with some pretty bad business practices from what it sounds like it's not you're not in for a happy time crunch bad practices monitoring stuff all those sorts of things just doesn't make a healthy environment okay but what about a studio that did have a bit of a a cult hit so hyper light drifter so the studio behind that may not survive So Heart Machine laid off nearly its entire staff this week after a publisher pulled out of an unannounced and funded project.
Dan HHOST
3:37
Studio head Alex Preston broke the news on LinkedIn, which is, you know, another sad thing.
Dan HHOST
3:42
Hyper Light Drifter, I've not played it, I have to admit, but I know it was a much loved game and it has built up a bit of a following.
Dan HHOST
4:35
They serve a part of the market, right? But it's just every week we're seeing this and we have been saying that for a number of weeks, but it's when you have these, well, in the first example, kind of new company, but these companies where they're struggling just because of, yeah, it's tough,
Dan HHOST
4:53
tough, really tough.
Dan HHOST
4:54
Yeah, Alex Preston said on LinkedIn right now, I'm not sure yet how or if Heart Machine survives.
Dan HHOST
5:01
He did say the studio will keep pushing to build a path, but there's no concrete plan yet.
Full ClipHOST
36:45
boy
Erock the RedHOST
36:46
what a fun name um so yeah um they're done hopefully you know those developers there can bounce back i can't imagine there were many left but um One other one we got to talk about, Heart Machine.
Erock the RedHOST
37:00
They're an indie developer.
Erock the RedHOST
37:01
They're known for Hyper Light Drifter, Solar Ash.
Erock the RedHOST
37:17
And that funding, they backed out.
Erock the RedHOST
37:19
So they no longer have the funds to continue.
Erock the RedHOST
37:22
And unfortunately, you have to lay off the majority of the staff that they had there did say, I'm not sure yet what's next for Heart Machine to survive.
Erock the RedHOST
37:31
However, we'll keep pushing to build a path while we are still here.
Chris ElogiHOST
83:30
Speaking of playoffs, these continue on.
Chris ElogiHOST
83:33
Heart Machine seems like it's laid off the vast majority of its staff after a publisher pulled funding for one of their upcoming games.
Chris ElogiHOST
83:43
This is, yeah, so essentially you can probably assume the studio is going to be shutting down most likely.
Chris ElogiHOST
83:50
Yeah.
Emmett Watkins Jr.HOST
155:58
And then I kind of want to lump this together with the next story as well, which is a similar scenario.
Emmett Watkins Jr.HOST
156:03
Heart Machine, the developers of Hyper Light Drifter and Hyper Light Breaker.
Emmett Watkins Jr.HOST
156:07
Yeah, just a
TL FosterHOST
156:08
bummer.
Emmett Watkins Jr.HOST
158:15
But yeah,
Chris AntistaHOST
158:16
it's...
Emmett Watkins Jr.HOST
158:18
Heart's going out to those over at Heart Machine and also Build a Rocket Boy.
Emmett Watkins Jr.HOST
158:22
Hopefully it...
Michael HuberHOST
2:56
Friggin' layoffs.
Michael HuberHOST
2:58
IGN and Heart Machine.
Isla HinckPANELIST
2:59
Yeah, that's
Michael HuberHOST
3:00
crazy.

47 MINS LATER

Isla HinckPANELIST
50:12
so strange
Michael HuberHOST
50:13
Yeah, it's brutal.
Michael HuberHOST
50:15
Another round of layoffs from Hyperlite Drifter Studio Heart Machine.
Michael HuberHOST
50:22
Full disclosure, Isla knows some of these humans.
John WarrenHOST
64:47
Thank God.
John WarrenHOST
64:51
Also, Heart Machine, which is the development studio out in Los Angeles.
John WarrenHOST
64:56
That's here.
John WarrenHOST
64:58
Yeah, that's there.
John WarrenHOST
67:58
It is done done because they were working on an unannounced game, but the publisher apparently decided to stop funding it.
John WarrenHOST
68:04
Alex Preston, who I do know personally, just a quick ethical disclosure aside, said without this key income for the studio, nearly everyone at the studio had to be laid off.
John WarrenHOST
68:17
I'm not sure yet how or if Heart Machine survives.
John WarrenHOST
68:21
Um, the company is called heart machine because Alex Preston has had a harrowing life with, uh, some heart defect stuff.
Ralph PanebiancoHOST
16:42
More Bummer Studio news to end, and this one hits really hard, actually.
Ralph PanebiancoHOST
16:44
Heart Machine, the studio behind Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash, may be at risk of closing after laying off almost their entire staff.
Ralph PanebiancoHOST
16:51
Studio head Alex Preston took to LinkedIn to explain that the studio has been working on an unannounced title with a publisher attached, but quote, this week they decided to no longer move forward with it.
Ralph PanebiancoHOST
16:59
Without this key income for the studio, any other immediate prospects or other funds, nearly everyone at the studio had to be laid off.
Ralph PanebiancoHOST
17:05
It's devastating, end quote.
Ralph PanebiancoHOST
17:06
Preston went on to detail that the affected staff would be given as much help as possible by the studio to help find new jobs.
Ralph PanebiancoHOST
17:11
This is not the first time that Heart Machine has suffered cuts.
Ralph PanebiancoHOST
17:14
In October of 2025, a number of layoffs occurred in conjunction with the team ending development on their Hyper Light Drifter sequel, Hyper Light Breaker.
