Press Gazette's Charlotte Tobbitt is the panel moderator, and she's joined by Myra Bonheim, Head of Newsletters at The Telegraph, Malcolm Coles, Audience Growth Director at Hearst, and Anna Spittoni, Deputy Head of Digital at The Times and Sunday Times.

They share how actively embracing publishing fewer but higher quality articles and newsletters has had a measurable impact on audience growth, conversion, and subscriber retention.

So you've kind of been doing a project with a similar sort of ethos.

And I wanted to give a shout out to InStyle Magazine, which is run by Sally Holmes, who I used to work with at Hearst.

Not at Women's Health.

She worked at Elk.

Yeah, you do.

Well, you know, I obviously have a teeny tiny fraction of your experience.

But when I was at Hearst, the magazine group, they organized a union.

And I remember as a manager, I had never gone through anything like that.

And there is yellow journalism in this era.

It is going to fully flourish with Hearst.

Pulitzer and Hearst are the two big publishers.

There is a reason there is a Pulitzer Prize for Excellence in Journalism, and there is not a Hearst Prize for Excellence in Journalism.

Hearst was a tabloid guy.

He famously said that he wanted 90% of all coverage to be stories with about 10% facts included.

And one of them happened to be...

Ex-writer for Hearst Newspapers.

Had a master's degree in writing and happened to be our FO, and it was Zeke.

I wrote a lot about Zeke.

And I said, I'll tell you what, I'll actually write my story down for you.

So I'm doing that, and at the same time, I thought, I need to make this accurate.

So I sent it to three guys I was in Vietnam with, and one of them happened to be a forward observer at Zeke, and he was a writer for Hearst Newspapers.

After Vietnam, he played football for Michigan and got a master's degree in English, and So he's helping me along with this and just not as much as I was hoping.

They're both part of

Hearst.

Yeah.

And Motor Trend doesn't test as extensively as Car and Driver.
