Welcome back to Wake Up To Money on Monday, the 26th of October.
Will BainHOST
32:46
We're our panel this morning.
Will BainHOST
32:47
Kim Sides, Executive Director of Construction for BAM UK and Ireland and Anna McDonald, Investment Strategy Director for Hargreaves Lansdowne, both here in the studio with me this morning.
Stephen YiuGUEST
2:43
So basically, I want to have the flexibility of being a global equity manager that we could invest into the best companies around the world as the history evolves.
Ramin NakisaHOST
2:55
So in terms of how the fund actually started, I understand that Peter Hargreaves, who is the guy who was behind Hargreaves Lansdowne, the big investment platform, he gave you seed capital of £25 million to start it.
Ramin NakisaHOST
3:09
What was the relationship with Peter and how did it all kick off?
Stephen YiuGUEST
3:13
I started my career with Peter just over 25 years ago.
Stephen YiuGUEST
3:56
And then basically what happened was back in 2016, which is just about a year before the strategy was launched, that Peter and I were talking about doing something ourselves a few years back.
Stephen YiuGUEST
4:05
And at the time, I just left my job at a global long-shot hedge fund.
Stephen YiuGUEST
4:10
And then Peter also at the time has retired from all his active roles at Hargreaves Lansdowne.
Stephen YiuGUEST
4:16
So he was still the major shareholder in Hargreaves Lansdowne, but no longer have any active roles.
JamieHOST
16:26
If investors are particularly enthusiastic about a trust's investment strategy or future prospects, they might be willing to pay a premium above the net asset value.
JamieHOST
16:35
In fact, at the time of recording, I can see that Scottish Mortgage's estimated net asset value is 1,814 pence per share, according to Hargreaves Lansdowne, but the actual share price is 1,568p per share, meaning it's trading at a discount of roughly 13.5%.
JamieHOST
16:55
But actually, given that this fund has traded at a discount for basically the last four years, it's not really a surprise to see that discount is still there today.
JamieHOST
17:04
I'd say this feature of net asset values is the key thing to be aware of, and how investment trusts don't identically mirror the value of their underlying investments in the way that ETFs do.
Mark AtkinsonHOST
13:40
I had registered to attend and did not receive login details.
Mark AtkinsonHOST
13:45
So I missed this valuable opportunity.
Mark AtkinsonHOST
13:47
And I'm currently locking antlers with the Hargreaves Lansdowne slash Broadridge by help of the ombudsman.
Mark AtkinsonHOST
13:56
And I will report in due course.
Paul KerinHOST
13:59
Okay, another thing you're very critical of is when companies that you invest in give your money away to charities.
RyanHOST
7:16
But I think for people that are using those types of platforms where you haven't got fractional shares in ETFs, and they want all their money to be invested and not have any cash sitting over, then using something like the HSBC FTSE All World is a great way to go about it, assuming you want a low cost global fund as your main holding.
RyanHOST
7:35
For me personally, I actually use this fund above the FTSE Global All Cap in my Vanguard SIP ISA and Hargreaves Lansdowne stocks and shares lifetime ISA for that exact reason.
RyanHOST
7:46
I want all of my money to be invested.
RyanHOST
7:48
So I use mutual funds on those platforms.
DamienHOST
13:31
I personally wouldn't be putting cash into ELISA for retirement as I feel I'm missing out on 30 years worth of stock market returns.
DamienHOST
13:37
And while past performance is no guarantee of future performance... 30 year timeline for me personally is great.
DamienHOST
13:45
Historically, I've used Hargreaves Lansdowne as my Lysa provider because really they were one of the only providers available at the time that I was looking to open one.
DamienHOST
13:52
Now there's a few more providers on the market.
DamienHOST
13:55
So let's take a look at some of the best providers that are out there and just compare them and see which one we think is good.
DamienHOST
14:14
You have your DIY platforms.
DamienHOST
14:16
We have lots of control over your investments.
DamienHOST
14:18
Here we have AJ Bell and Hargreaves Lansdowne.
DamienHOST
10:05
Investing in the next style of platform that we will call do it with a little help really is not that hard.
DamienHOST
10:11
In this category, we'll include providers like Vanguard, Hargreaves, Lansdowne, AJ Bell and Fidelity.
DamienHOST
10:15
Now, while AJ Bell and Hargreaves Lansdowne allow you to buy individual shares in companies through their platforms, they charge dealing fees and they're quite high.
DamienHOST
10:23
A dealing fee is essentially the cost that they apply to you for buying individual shares in companies.
DamienHOST
10:28
For Hargreaves Lansdowne, for example, it's $11.95 per trade up to the first nine trades.
DamienHOST
10:34
After that, it gets slightly cheaper, but there's still a cost there every time.
DamienHOST
10:38
If you consider that free trade and trade in 212 don't have this cost at all, then that looks really expensive.
DamienHOST
10:43
As well as that, HL don't allow fractional shares, which means the ability to buy a bit of a share.
Nick FerrariHOST
26:12
Into the world of finance, where we speak money at around this time of the day.
Nick FerrariHOST
26:15
Joined by Anna McDonald, who's investment strategy director at Hargreaves Lansdown.
Nick FerrariHOST
26:18
Good morning to you, Anna.
Nick FerrariHOST
26:20
Figures dropped a little over half an hour ago concerning the UK economy.
Nick FerrariHOST
30:46
I hope it all went well.
Nick FerrariHOST
30:47
Anna, thank you.
Nick FerrariHOST

Anna McDonald, investment strategy director at Hargreaves Lansdown.
Nick FerrariHOST
30:50
Now, if we're talking airports at 20 minutes before 8:00, let me take you back to the conversation I had with the Prime Minister.
Mark GillanGUEST
22:42
So Adam Norris, um, and, and the connection wasn't fully baked by then.
Mark GillanGUEST
22:47
Uh, so Adam Norris, uh, a very successful, uh, businessman, brought direct sell pensions into the UK, was running half of Hargre- Hargreaves Lansdown.
Mark GillanGUEST
22:57
Uh, he sort of pulled back from that and decided after making a, a reasonable amount of money to invest into renewable, uh, energy, uh, and, and set up a company called Wavepar.
Mark GillanGUEST
23:09
Uh, so I was brought in as chief, uh, technology officer to sort of develop with the team a new wave energy device.
Ian CorfieldGUEST
46:04
Um, and then finally we started to broaden our distribution.
Ian CorfieldGUEST
46:07
So we've actually just gone on Hargreaves Lansdown, which I think is a fantastic platform-
Phil ClarkHOST
46:11
Mm-hmm
Ian CorfieldGUEST
46:11
... for attracting cash.
