And it's a place that I think we do not have so many controls, and it's a place that appears so deeply from our own personal memories of life.
Heidi ZuckermanHOST

His projects have transformed spaces, including the Museum of Modern Art, which is where I first saw the work, Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Serpentine Gallery, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
Heidi ZuckermanHOST

And now in Los Angeles, he has co-founded Dataland, the world's first museum of AI arts.
Heidi ZuckermanHOST

I went there yesterday, and we'll talk about it today.

39 MINS LATER

Heidi ZuckermanHOST
40:43
You've moved from making work for museums to creating a museum yourself, and I, I'm curious what you feel museums weren't able to do that made you wanna build one.
Heidi ZuckermanHOST
40:54
And maybe that's not even the right question, but as a person who's built museums, I'm curious about that.
Refik AnadolGUEST
41:01
So I think it's literally, I will say before MoMA and Guggenheim and Pompeii, this is incredible, and Serpentine, these exhibitions make a huge impact.
Refik AnadolGUEST
41:10
All these exhibitions, we are so grateful that create a very positive impact in their own worlds.
Paulo PongGUEST
8:02
It was the first show that we put on in our galleries.
Paulo PongGUEST
8:05
And it traveled to Guggenheim Bilbao.
Paulo PongGUEST
8:08
It traveled to Porto as well.
Paulo PongGUEST
8:10
So that's definitely a highlight moment, and it came right off the bat.
Yari StiloHOST
1:04
I'm, I'm trying my best.
Peter MillsHOST
1:07
I went to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao-
Yari StiloHOST
1:11
Mm-hmm
Peter MillsHOST
1:11
... uh, this weekend and, um, they had an exhibition or they had a retrospective of, uh, Jasper Johns' work.
AnnaGUEST
34:05
It's quite nice.
AnnaGUEST
34:05
The bus drives you past the Guggenheim Museum there, which is a beautiful building, and they drop you off right in the center beside these lovely gardens, and then you can go and explore.
AnnaGUEST
34:13
But [laughs] we were so hot.
AnnaGUEST
34:16
We walked around, went into a few little shops, walked around the gardens and admired them, and then were probably back on the bus about an hour later, um, because it was too hot to wander.
Cecile AngerGUEST

first is what I would call institutional brand licensing, this is when an existing museum authorizes another institution to use its name and identity to create a new museum.
Cecile AngerGUEST
6:48
The Guggenheim Bilbao and the Louvre Abu Dhabi are probably the best-known examples.
Cecile AngerGUEST
6:53
These are exceptional agreements involving world famous institutions, very long partnerships, and of course, sophisticated and legal and financial arrangements.
Cecile AngerGUEST
7:05
But this is only one form of licensing and indeed concerns relatively few museums.
Julia FossiGUEST
51:53
it was great i mean we went to bilbao and i there was another guy who played the policeman in the first episode and he and i were staying in this big posh hotel in the middle of bilbao and we had a great time because they brought us in for costume for wardrobe on the monday but i wasn't filming until the wednesday so we had monday and then we had a day off and then we had then i was filming so it was bilbao so we went out on the monday night and did a lot of um pinchos and wine and got very drunk, which fortunately was okay because we had the whole of the next day off.
Julia FossiGUEST
52:29
We did the Guggenheim with very bad hangovers.
Julia FossiGUEST
52:34
I've always found the smaller parts the most fun.
Julia FossiGUEST
52:37
Yeah, absolutely.
Fergal O'KeeffeHOST
12:12
So when I got off the boat, then the first place I went to was to Bilbao.
Fergal O'KeeffeHOST
12:18
And I was so impressed because, you know, the Guggenheim, everyone knows it's what put the city on the map.
Fergal O'KeeffeHOST
12:25
But it had a lot to live up to and it totally was... way better than I even imagined it could be like how unbelievably stunning but what really what I loved about it was there's a right in the middle of the city lined up to all the streets so you're looking anytime you're in these narrow streets you can always see it off in the distance That's what made it for me.
Conor PowerGUEST

Well, like the Guggenheim in New York, of course.
Thomas Sebastian JensenHOST
2:24
From Galicia, we continue along Spain's northern coast to Getso, the cruise port for our visit to Bilbao.
Thomas Sebastian JensenHOST
2:31
And there, one building becomes the clear focus of the day, the extraordinary Guggenheim Museum.
Thomas Sebastian JensenHOST
2:38
For me, the most fascinating part will not necessarily be the art inside, but the architecture of the museum itself, with its titanium surfaces, sweeping curves, and constantly changing perspectives.
Thomas Sebastian JensenHOST
2:51
After Spain, MSC Magnifica returns to France.
NedHOST
8:22

NedHOST

It's the Guggenheim.
NedHOST
8:23
Yeah, it's the Guggenheim.
NedHOST
8:26
I'm not saying I'll stick it on the Guggenheim.
NedHOST
8:27
I'll get arrested for that.
NedHOST
8:29
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
