GS1

This is where it gets interesting.

GS1, the organization that runs barcodes, has had this solved for years.

GS1, as in the people who issue GTINs? The same.

Their global data model defines two attributes.

reference GTIN type code and reference GTIN.

It's documented.

So where does it live? It lives in GDSN.

The Global Data Synchronization Network, which GS1 describes as the world's largest product data network.

Baked into that is openEHR.

We also use other standards such as GS1 for locations and, and identification of people.

And so to our mind, what we look at is it's how do we put all those different standards and terminologies and elements together to form that truly semantic interoperability data payload, for want of a better way of looking at it.

Yeah.

Uh, and that's really...

Sparked is the public face we put on that.

I can guarantee we don't go to Sparked events and we won't sit there and talk about those, say, "How does this GS1 thing interact with this one, with, with that, and, and, and how does SNOMED CT underpin this and match to an openEHR concept?" We don't do that.

We talk about what matters to the clinicians in the room.

Imagine you're about to undergo surgery.

It started with a question.

How do you get thousands of products, hundreds of suppliers and multiple hospital departments to work from the same information? The answer was standardization.

Beginning in 2017, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi worked with GS1 UAE and its suppliers to create a common way of identifying products across the hospital.

Think of it like giving every product its own passport, a unique identity that could be recognized by everyone.

Once those identifiers were in place, barcode scanning became much more powerful.

The UDI should be linked to the... manufacturer.

So when you do UDI search on the databases like Udamed or even on the GS1 database or on the other database, we should identify that the legal manufacturer is the original manufacturer and not the distributor.

even if the distributor has specifically ordered this product for his brand that he has defined, but they are not the legal manufacturer.

So as usual, the legal manufacturer is the owner of the device, even if there is a contract with the distributor of exclusivity.

There's another aspect of this too, that probably worth mentioning, which is when you have this kind of traceability as not just something that's available to regulators and to food producers and to wholesalers and so on, but actual consumers.

So there's another aspect to the traceability, which is the GS1, which is a GS1 is a data standard and encoding standard for focused on supply chain efficiency and safety.

There's this initiative GS1 Sunrise, which starts 2027.

And part of that is on food packages for really for the first time is having a 2D code, a very data dense 2D code that allows consumers to scan with their phone and they can see the origins of the product that they've used.

And so That's kind of an interesting, you know, democratizing that, if you will, for people.
