Gregory Maguire's original novel Wicked is a complex, deeply cynical, mature, political revisionist history of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Wicked, the novel by Gregory Maguire, the 2003 Broadway musical, and now the massive two-part film directed by Jon Chu, is a commercial juggernaut.
speaker_2HOST
It is officially licensed.
speaker_2HOST
It is highly prestigious.
speaker_1HOST
However, if we define fan fiction by its creative intent and structural origin, meaning the unauthorized or speculative expansion of another author's universe, then Wicked is perhaps the most culturally dominant piece of fan fiction of our era.
speaker_2HOST
Walk me through that, because Frank L. Baum wrote The Wizard of Oz over a century ago.

According to the source, Maguire had loved Baum's book and the iconic 1939 film since childhood.
speaker_1HOST
Yeah.
