Last week, SpaceX agreed to buy a big chunk of low-band spectrum to expand the Starlink network.
Nilay PatelHOST
0:52
That spectrum's been traded around the telecom business for decades now, but SpaceX's ambitious plan is to build, quote, "The world's most advanced mobile network." Combined with the news that the FCC approved the deployment of 15,000 next-gen Starlink satellites and the company's previous agreement to purchase $20 billion worth of EchoStar spectrum last year, it's now clear that SpaceX is serious about competing with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.
Nilay PatelHOST
1:15
I've covered the telecom business for a long time, and I've always known these companies can say they want to do something until they run into the harsh reality of how expensive it is to actually do it.
Nilay PatelHOST
1:24
The telecom graveyard of pivots, bad ideas, and failed acquisitions is vast.
Nilay PatelHOST
1:28
Walt has been closely monitoring SpaceX acquisitions, though, and he's correctly predicted that SpaceX was headed in this direction for months now.
Nilay PatelHOST
1:35
So I wanted to dig in to whether SpaceX can pull this off, why Walt thinks the existing telecom companies have really fumbled their response to SpaceX's growing threat, and what happens when Elon Musk's rocket company jumps headfirst into a business that everyone loves to hate.

Okay, Lightshed Partners' Walter Piecyk on the harsh reality of SpaceX's mobile wireless plans.
Steve EismanHOST
3:51
Sounds great, but the service is not nearly as good as the service provided by telecom providers.
Steve EismanHOST
3:58
Now, Starlink announced that it was acquiring Grain Management's fourteen megahertz of eight hundred megahertz spectrum.
Steve EismanHOST
4:05
Now, I don't want to get too technical, but this will definitely improve Starlink's service in the US.
Steve EismanHOST
4:10
However, as best as I can tell, this is still not nearly good enough.
Max the BotHOST
8:38
And speaking of rails, the most interesting non-AI infrastructure story today came from Ben Thompson's Stratechery update on October thirteenth, SpaceX buys more spectrum, Musk and market structure distributed cellular.
Max the BotHOST
8:51
Thompson discussed the Wall Street Journal report that SpaceX reached a deal to buy eight hundred megahertz cellular spectrum licenses from Grain Management for about eight billion dollars in cash.
Max the BotHOST
9:01
These are US licenses tailored for terrestrial wireless service from cell phone towers, not just satellite to handset communication.
Max the BotHOST
9:09
The market reaction was immediate.
Troy MillingsHOST
59:54
And obviously we saw what happened to Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile in the after hours.
Troy MillingsHOST
60:00
But the interesting part is this, right? So Spectrum was actually owned by Grain Management.
Troy MillingsHOST
60:07
yeah so why did they why did they buy that well we know that starlink is satellite service but in order to reach customers on a wide scale you got to have some low bandwidth and so the low bandwidth signal travels through like the 800 um gigahertz that they oh the megahertz that they bought it can travel on low areas it can travel in rural areas it can penetrate through some buildings small businesses so that's important if you're starlink grain management used to be owned by a telecommunications company named T-Mobile.
Troy MillingsHOST
60:41
So think about this.
Troy MillingsHOST
60:42
They sold the low bandwidth to grain management and Starlink came and bought it from grain management.
Troy MillingsHOST
60:50
So T-Mobile sold the company that is now about to disrupt their industry.
Troy MillingsHOST
60:55
And it's disruption because again, we know that they can be in places that most phone companies can because they have a satellite service we know that they can be in dead zones where most telecommunications can't because of the satellite service they can be in plenty of rural areas where sat where uh ground service can't be they can't be in plenty of countries countries that don't even have that infrastructure yet so it is a disruption what they can't do with satellite and this is the part that people have to understand is that in order to have millions and millions and hundreds of millions people using the service you can't just use satellite you got to have some ground infrastructure so as long as those companies and these companies i mean verizon's been here forever t-mobile has made its imprint obviously you know taking over sprint at t has uh fiber optics And they have phone service, so they have a combination there.
Imran ShaikhHOST
2:28
And SpaceX has revealed that it plans to become a major mobile carrier and not just a satellite internet broadband service provider with Starlink.
Imran ShaikhHOST
2:36
To achieve that goal, it has agreed to acquire 100% of Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio.
Imran ShaikhHOST
2:45
SpaceX says the acquisition is for a low-band spectrum license portfolio of up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band, though it's still pending FCC approval.
Imran ShaikhHOST
2:57
Access to the low-band spectrum will address one of the key technical gaps remaining to be able to turn Starlink into a major mobile carrier in the US, SpaceX adds.
NancyHOST
1:53
This is a big one.
MarkHOST
1:54
They have just agreed to pay roughly $8 billion in cash to a private equity firm called Grain Management.
NancyHOST
2:01
$8 billion, just a staggering number.
MarkHOST
2:04
Right.
MarkHOST
2:51
It just wouldn't connect.
NancyHOST
2:52
Exactly.
NancyHOST
2:53
Now, the TechGenyz report details that SpaceX is purchasing 100% of Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum.
MarkHOST
3:02
800 MHz.
Jeremiah BatesHOST
25:52
That, that's essentially it.
Jeremiah BatesHOST
25:53
So you had, you had SpaceX essentially threatening AT&T and Verizon's business model because of the development for Starlink, where they purchased a nationwide portfolio of 800 MHz wireless spectrum, and they bought it from a, uh, private equity company, Grain Management.
Jeremiah BatesHOST
26:13
They purchased it for around $8 billion.
Jeremiah BatesHOST
26:15
So essentially what this allows Starlink to do is because those lower frequency signals can traver fa- can travel farther, penetrate buildings better than those higher frequency signals.
DooglesHOST
32:35
And we can make this one short.
DooglesHOST
32:37
So what happened on Thursday was SpaceX bought this like what's the easiest way to describe this a bit of wireless spectrum from grain management which is a it's an investment firm that looks like infrastructure stuff so for about eight billion dollars they bought a spectrum that could be up to from a width perspective 14 megahertz and a frequency band is 800 megahertz what those mean is this 800 megahertz allows for you to have a greater ability to potentially go through like walls and bushes it's like what you would need if you wanted to make home mobile more accessible okay 14 megahertz the width is just how much bandwidth potentially have so in short spacex got more wireless bandwidth and bandwidth that will be more capable of going into homes the stocks for like t-mobile and at t want to say at all although there's only one more so i could name it fell verizon
SkippyHOST
33:41
13 yeah yeah
DooglesHOST
33:43
it happens any time that you know when amazon's like i'm going to the pharmacy all the you know all the pharmacy stocks drop or like this always happens so that's that part's not a big deal but i found this to be like particularly interesting not from the perspective of spacex buying i'm sorry building a wireless carrier To me, I'm just like, if you own the satellite spectrum, let me keep this simple, and you have a solid network on the ground, so terrestrial spectrum, the things you can do with that I think are so much more interesting than creating a carrier.
Rena SherbillHOST
25:56
For those that may not know or that may not have listened to today's Wall Street Breakfast Podcast, SpaceX's $8 billion deal to buy a nationwide low-band spectrum portfolio sparked a sudden sell-off in major telecom stocks.
Rena SherbillHOST
26:10
Grain Management said in a statement that SpaceX will acquire 100% of Grain's nationwide spectrum portfolio, and consequently, telecom shares dipped in pre-mar- pre-market action.
Rena SherbillHOST
26:24
T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T were all down roughly 6%.
Rena SherbillHOST
26:29
Steve, what else would you add to that story?
ZacHOST
8:18
With this new spectrum and our Gen2 constellation, Starlink Mobile can ensure Americans have access to high-speed mobile broadband no matter where they are." What are we talking about here?
JesseHOST
8:27
Well, SpaceX acquired 14 megahertz of nationwide 800 megahertz low-band spectrum from Grain Management, formerly held by T-Mobile.
JesseHOST
8:35
This adds to the complimentary mid-band purchases from EchoStar for $8 billion.
ZacHOST
8:40
Yeah, this is a big purchase.
