Global Citizen

We are an advocacy organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty. We do this by encouraging people to learn and take action on our platform; those actions apply pressure on world leaders to make commitments around the issues associated with extreme poverty: gender equality, food security, education, the environment, global health, citizenship, and sanitation. We don't ask people for money, but to take action for the world’s poor. These actions can be as simple as a tweet, signing a petition, making a phone call, or sending an email. By taking action, these Global Citizens are rewarded with access and tickets to our music festivals and other events around the world. So far, more than 13 million actions have been taken by Global Citizens, leading to $35 billion commitments being made by world leaders, which are set to affect 1.3 billion lives by 2030.www.globalcitizen.org

Jesse KirschbaumGUEST
1:43
It's the Global Citizen Festival.
Jesse KirschbaumGUEST

Do good while enjoying yourself.

Seth SchachnerHOST
16:08
I can't make a case for reducing it, but it makes a heck of a lot of sense.
Seth SchachnerHOST
16:12
It's also interesting, you know, coming from Sony, hearing now just the connectivity between all these global markets.
Seth SchachnerHOST
16:20
You mentioned Global Citizen to start, but, you know, like When I was with Sony, even in the Latin group, like Spain, where I think she's from, right? And the repertoire comes from there.
Seth SchachnerHOST
16:29
A guy named Jose Maria Barabat, I think, is probably somewhat involved making that happen.
Claire PooleHOST
15:58
This is off the pitch, but the inference is clear in terms of covering over that sponsor.
Claire PooleHOST
16:05
Club captain Alex Pearce was asked about this on stage at a recent Global Citizen conference by Friends of the Pod frontrunners leader Nicola Poe.
Claire PooleHOST
16:14
He basically acknowledged the discomfort of being asked about this, but he also recognized its significance as well.
Claire PooleHOST
16:21
He said, it shows that no matter how big that influence is, no matter who you are as a stakeholder, you can have influence in what goes into funding our sport and community programs.
Dan CorderHOST
30:40
I'm going to be so boring.
Dan CorderHOST
30:42
I'm going to guess Global Citizen when Beyonce performed with Jay-Z.
Dan CorderHOST
30:44
That's my guess.
JamesHOST
30:46
That was at F&B.
JamesHOST
31:08
I'm still going to stick with that.
JamesHOST
31:09
No, they would have filled more of that.
JamesHOST
31:11
What venue? I think Global Citizen probably cut off, you know, when they cut off half the stadium and then they only face one way.
JamesHOST
31:18
Okay.
Sam JonesHOST
4:14
That's all for today's headlines.

You can read more at businessnews.com.au. Coming up on the podcast, Nadia Budihajo and I discuss Global Citizen and the event they held in Perth this week.

Sam JonesHOST
5:09
So first off, who's Michael and why is he in Perth at the moment?
Nadia BudihardjoGUEST
5:12
Yeah, so I spoke to, as you mentioned, Michael Sheldrake.
Nadia BudihardjoGUEST
5:16
And he is the, I got to get his title right because it's quite long, but he is the Chief Policy Impact and Government Relations Officer at Global Citizen.
Nadia BudihardjoGUEST
5:27
Or basically, he's really known as a co-founder of that organisation.
James MacPhersonHOST
31:58
In no short part to their captain, Alex Pearce, limping off injured before the final siren.
James MacPhersonHOST
32:04
Well, Fremantle now look like they could lose their major sponsor, thanks to their captain, who's gone off at a Global Citizen seminar today saying he feels uncomfortable about the fact that the Frio Footy Club is sponsored by Woodside, who, of course, deal in oil and gas.
James MacPhersonHOST
32:22
Now, Woodside have sponsored the Fremantle Dockers since 2010, and over the past 16 years have injected something between $28 and $30 million into the football club.
James MacPhersonHOST
32:34
Alex Pearce, the captain of the team, was being interviewed at an event by a St Kilda female player.
Joe ScarboroughHOST
21:13
Hey, so, so Fran, you, you, you and Cisco are involved in two of my favorite organizations anywhere.
Joe ScarboroughHOST
21:19
Of course, Global Citizen-
Fran KatsoudasGUEST
21:21
Mm-hmm
Joe ScarboroughHOST
21:21
... which is fighting every day, uh, poverty, uh, extreme poverty.
Fran KatsoudasGUEST
22:08
And so when you have these moments where we can come together in support, um, in support of learning, how we s- mentor each other, I think those are the moments that actually give you the energy to show up to the tough times as well.
Joe ScarboroughHOST
22:22
Mm-hmm.
Fran KatsoudasGUEST
22:23
And I would just say thank you for being such a big supporter of Global Citizen.
Joe ScarboroughHOST
22:27
Oh my gosh.
Jamie BurnettHOST
38:12
A bloke called Michael Sheldrick.
Jamie BurnettHOST
38:14
He's the co-founder of this group charity called Global Citizen.
Jamie BurnettHOST
38:18
What's remarkable, I reckon he'd be a great negotiator.
Jamie BurnettHOST
38:22
Because he puts on these huge concerts and he gets celebrities to partake for free and raises money for kids living in poverty.

37 MINS LATER

Jamie BurnettHOST
75:42
It is eight minutes past five.
Jamie BurnettHOST
75:44
As I said, a bit of Perth boy done good here.
Jamie BurnettHOST
75:47
Michael Sheldrick is the co-founder of Global Citizen, charity that has raised staggering amounts of money to help those living in poverty.
Jamie BurnettHOST
75:55
Now, part of this huge work, but has been engaging some massive celebrities, musicians, artists, names like Beyonce, Rihanna, Coldplay, just a few.
Michael TrainerHOST
2:43
And it had been such a profound influence on my life that I wanted to have that increase out and have that benefit expand out for people.
Michael TrainerHOST
2:53
And having just come off of building Global Citizen, which was this incredible movement, very outward focused towards making the world a better place where we raised millions and then billions of dollars around ending extreme poverty.
Michael TrainerHOST
3:12
I also had this deep reflection around what would it look like to focus on the inner world and the inner work? Because in my view, the two are inextricably linked.
Michael TrainerHOST
3:22
To hold the space for outer transformation, whether it be individually or collectively, we have to do the work inside.

7 MINS LATER

Michael TrainerHOST
10:23
I feel closer to that love internally.
Michael TrainerHOST
10:25
But as it is materialized in physical form in a partnership and ideally, God willing, in the form of a family that I can create with that partner in the not so distant future, I don't feel any closer to that goal.
Michael TrainerHOST
10:47
And I thought earlier today, why am I sad? And at first I was like, you know what, maybe I feel like in the previous decade I had achieved so much, whether it be with Global Citizen, whether it be hosting as well as the Dalai Lama, launching Peak Mind.
Michael TrainerHOST
11:03
And I don't feel I had the commensurate level of achievement over the course of the last decade.
Brooke DeVard OzaydinliHOST
47:22
Yes.
Zerina AkersGUEST
47:22
And she didn't wanna wear it on stage for Global Citizen.
Zerina AkersGUEST
47:27
I had had it for Global Citizen for the p- performance, and she was afraid it was too like risque and the conversation would shift.
Zerina AkersGUEST
47:33
And then it found, we like built a whole set around this look.
Brooke DeVard OzaydinliHOST
47:36
Yeah.
Jaji PrimeHOST
65:19
Because you did it with Tiwa Savage.
Jaji PrimeHOST
65:21
That Tiwa came online, came to the Breakfast Club, apologized on your behalf for your comments, and you go on stage on Global Citizen and say, sorry, not sorry.
Jaji PrimeHOST
65:31
You can do that to a Tiwa.
Jaji PrimeHOST
65:33
Don't worry.
