A savage barbarian in the mini comics, a prince with a secret in the Filmation cartoon, and a space guy in the New Adventures.

And in 2008, Mattel did something rather ambitious.
speaker_0HOST
They launched a collector toyline, Masters of the Universe Classics, that set out to fold every piece of lore that came before it into one cohesive narrative.

Hit him and the damage shows up.

Reissued in 2001 for the commemorative series.

Prince Adam, He-Man's royal alter ego in plastic to match the Filmation cartoon.
speaker_0HOST
Sort of.
Brandon PetersHOST
That's why they originally called it, it used to be called a cult classic, Star Trek, because it only ran for three seasons, didn't get to 100 episodes.
Brandon PetersHOST
And there was an animated season of it in the 70s at one point from Filmation.
Brandon PetersHOST
And then they do the movies, and they were trying to bring it back for television all throughout the 70s.
Brandon PetersHOST
But then when Star Wars hits, they're like, well, you're making a movie.
Radical Ryan HunterHOST
You're a weakling.
Radical Ryan HunterHOST
Very unlike Cringer, but in the back is her helmet from the Filmation cartoon, the spaceship helmet.
Radical Ryan HunterHOST
So I love that they did do details like that.
DavidHOST
I love that there was all these little Easter eggs.
DavidHOST
I love the fact that there was definitely a reverence for the original.
Radical Ryan HunterHOST
There was at the end, did you hear the Filmation? Yeah.
Radical Ryan HunterHOST
Like Davidson earlier.
Radical Ryan HunterHOST
Ha ha ha ha ha.
Kristian AllenPANELIST
Even if some of their episodes, we don't think are shining examples of good talent.
Kristian AllenPANELIST
And yeah, Mr. Zalewski also, in some of his earlier credits, known as Anthony Zalewski, worked in animation from 1984, where he got his start writing for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe with Filmation, all the way through to 1997.
Kristian AllenPANELIST
It looks like he ended his career with Deke...
Kristian AllenPANELIST
But, and I'm going to see if Noel remembers this, Mr. Zalewski, for whatever Cobra World is, wrote one of the darkest episodes of Transformers.
Jack StewardsonHOST
A syndicated Archie radio show debuted in late May of 1943 and ran through to 1953.
Jack StewardsonHOST
An animated series was produced by Filmation in 1968, starring the Riverdale crew as a musical act known as The Archies.
Jack StewardsonHOST
A novelty track inspired by the series, Sugar Sugar, was released in May of 1969, debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining there for four consecutive weeks.
Jack StewardsonHOST
The Archies are an early example of a successful virtual band, and alongside Alvin and the Chipmunks, would pave the way for contemporary acts like Prozac and The Gorillaz.
Jack StewardsonHOST
The success of the Filmation series led to a number of studios and networks looking for a similar hit in Archie-like properties.
Jack StewardsonHOST
Enter Hanna-Barbera, who approached former MLJ, now Archie Comics, to adapt another of their properties.
Jack StewardsonHOST
They acquired the rights to Dan DiCarlo's Josie, basically a gender-bent Archie, red hair and all.

The one even the most casual fan or anyone who grew up in the 80s would most likely remember.
speaker_0HOST
Skeletor from the Filmation cartoon.
speaker_0HOST
Now, Filmation never really gives Skeletor a proper origin, although the sorceress does call him a demon from another dimension, mirroring the mini-comics.
speaker_0HOST
That said, Filmation's series Bible, written by Michael Halperin in December 1982, did give the demon a motive, even if the show never mentioned it.
speaker_0HOST
Skeletor came from a dying world called Infinita.
speaker_0HOST
And he wanted Eternia for its air and food.
speaker_0HOST
So yeah, fair enough reason to hop the fence and cause a ruckus on the other side.
speaker_0HOST
But a definitive origin isn't what Filmation is known for when it comes to Skeletor.
Petros PapadakisHOST
Eventually he came to create with the great Disney animator, Hal Sutherland, who left Disney.
Petros PapadakisHOST
Together, Matt, they created Filmation.
Petros PapadakisHOST
Because, you know, film and animation.

Petros PapadakisHOST
Lou put it together.
Mike RosadoHOST
But yeah, man, that was, that was, I remember watching those cartoons on, you know, it was a film nation.
Mike RosadoHOST
Um, and so I still remember like the Filmation logo at the beginning and the whole thing about just like, it felt so heroic and big and you know, and that, that was also.
Mike RosadoHOST
It began my love.
Mike RosadoHOST
It was a right around that time when I started to have this love of fantasy filmmaking, you know, like I was really into like Conan the Barbarian and Star Wars.
Micah FrazierHOST
I know I probably screwed that name up, but we're not from Paris, so it's okay.
Micah FrazierHOST
Lou Scheimer, 1928, co-founder of the Filmation Company.
Micah FrazierHOST
Ed Emberley, 1931 author and illustrator of the children's books, including the Ed Emberley series.

X7HOST
They especially didn't like look like Disney or Warner Brothers.
X7HOST
