Several years later this same company, owing to unsuccessful business arrangements, recalled their representatives to France and gave their officers order to sell the company's land and all its servants.

Esquimelin, then a servant of the company, was sold to a stern master by whom he was treated with great cruelty.

The British ships entered Gravesend Bay in modern Brooklyn, and troops marched to capture the ferry across the East River to the city with minimal resistance.

The governor at the time, Peter Stuyvesant, was unpopular with the residents of the city.

Articles of capitulation 1664 were drawn up, and the Dutch West India Company's colors were struck on September 8th of 1664, and the soldiers of the garrison marched to the East River for the trip home to the Netherlands.

The date of 1664 appeared on New York City's corporate seal until 1975, when the date was changed to 1625 to reflect the year of Dutch incorporation as a city, and to incidentally allow New York to celebrate its 350th anniversary just 11 years after its 300th.

It seems that brewing was brought to North America by European settlers from the late 16th century onwards.

In 1632, a brewery was built by the Dutch West India Company in Lower Manhattan, the birthplace of New York City.

It was the first commercial brewery in North America.

Many of the early settlers were from England or The Netherlands.
