Dischord Records
Dischord Records was created in 1980 to document the music coming out of the Washington, D.C. punk community. The label has put out the work of over 70 bands, and has distributed hundreds of other releases connected to the D.C. area. We will continue our work as long as this community continues to create music that speaks to us. Thanks.www.dischord.com

Episode 117: Shudder to Think "Pony Express Record" with Dustin Lince
D
4:04Dustin LentzGUEST
Oh, you did? Yeah, I love Shutter to Think.
D
4:07Dustin LentzGUEST
I mean, I was a big Discord fan anyways.
D
4:11Dustin LentzGUEST
Like, you know, love Fugazi, and they were on...
D
4:14Dustin LentzGUEST
One of their songs, Red House, was on a Discord comp.
D
4:20Dustin LentzGUEST
And maybe 9th or 10th grade, I got that.
D
4:24Dustin LentzGUEST
And it was on their album, Funeral at the Movies.
D
4:29Dustin LentzGUEST
So I discussed it a little bit in the Dinosaur Jr. episode that like, You know, even Outkast, we're trying to be more of Outkast than the Outkast.
D
4:39Dustin LentzGUEST
So like, I love Discord Records.
OTSwM #69 - Jerry Busher of Fugazi, Shadow Riot & Fidelity Jones
J
65:01Jerry BusherGUEST
So Shadow Riot's the, you know, kind of my main band, but I'm doing a duo thing with Devin Ocampo.
J
65:07Jerry BusherGUEST
And we actually just put out a CD that Discord has, Discord Direct has.
J
65:16Jerry BusherGUEST
It's on Bandcamp as well.
J
65:19Jerry BusherGUEST
I've been working with Devin.
J
65:21Jerry BusherGUEST
I don't know if you know Devin's work, but he's, actually he's had a band, Farrakhet, that I highly recommend you check out that actually have been doing some shows recently.
J
65:35Jerry BusherGUEST
They were on Discord.
J
65:39Jerry BusherGUEST
I think their...
J
65:41Jerry BusherGUEST
I mean, their record came out quite a while.
THE Computer World
B
29:03Bethany CosentinoHOST
He calls the songs full of overbearing cynicism and innocuous cliches.
B
29:08Bethany CosentinoHOST
He rips on Chad and Rachel Burke's vocals and tears apart Discord Records, the label that released it, for quashing creativity by forcing bands to conform to the Discord sound.
B
29:21Bethany CosentinoHOST
But the thing that stands out when reading it from the modern days is the reviewer's critique of Won't You Be Mine.
C
29:27Chad ClarkSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
I'm a black man.
C
30:32Chad ClarkSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
This is not something a white person could do or should do.
B
30:35Bethany CosentinoHOST
The reviewer ponders why the song starts with a sample of Mr. Rogers saying, won't you be my neighbor, without remarking on the show's history of anti-racist activism, and saying the lyrics, quote, vaguely hints at a discourse on race relations.
C
30:49Chad ClarkSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
I remember being nervous about it, presenting it to Discord, the label, Ian McKay, who was the leader of Fugazi and Minor Threat, Discord's very much highest-selling bands, most culturally influential.
C
31:03Chad ClarkSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
I would have understood if he had said, This song makes me nervous or this song makes me uncomfortable or I'm not sure if I can get behind this.
At The Drive-In — “One Armed Scissor”
R
10:33Rob HarvillaHOST
Of course, it will take me many years to grasp the poignance of Jawbox singing the line, just want a way not to be what gets sold to me, on track one of their major label debut album on Atlantic Records, after they'd previously put out a bunch of rad stuff on the super ultra cool and independent Washington, D.C. label Gatorade.
R
10:55Rob HarvillaHOST
Discord records, the scene politics, the spiritual ramifications of Jawbox jumping from Discord records to Atlantic records.
R
11:04Rob HarvillaHOST
I did not grasp any of that at the time.
R
11:07Rob HarvillaHOST
I had a Winesburg, Ohio level of obliviousness to that whole deal.
S
14:17Scott WeilandSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
Now, it sucks to have to tell people to behave themselves, but there's other people here too, all right? So try to be a little more kind.
R
14:25Rob HarvillaHOST
Okay, here we have a slightly more famous incident involving rock stars berating an unruly crowd.
R
14:32Rob HarvillaHOST
Here we have Ian McKay of the immortal, beloved, inimitable, but lots of bands tried Washington, D.C. rock band Fugazi, the flagship band on their own label, Discord Records, former home of Jawbox.
R
14:46Rob HarvillaHOST
It will take teenage me years, plural, to connect Fugazi and Jawbox because I'm busy with other stuff.

52:01London MayGUEST
We had a five week US tour planned.
L
52:05London MayGUEST
We had a record out on Discord.
L

Ian McKay had produced it.
L
52:09London MayGUEST
We were selling records.
How the Independent Artists’ Career Has Changed w/ Molly Neuman
K
9:38Kristin RobinsonHOST
... did that give you more career ambition for the project, rather than just, "We're doing this for fun with our local scene"?
M
9:45Molly NeumanGUEST
You know, i- i- in a way it was, it was really validating and exciting, but I think because our peers at the time and the people that we really looked up to had their own labels, so they were labels that were from a scene like Dischord or K Records in Olympia, and so I think that those were the labels that were probably more in our sights.
M
10:10Molly NeumanGUEST
DC, yeah, Dischord only put out bands from DC, and even though I grew up there and I'm technically from there, our band really wasn't.
K
10:18Kristin RobinsonHOST
Yeah.
M
10:18Molly NeumanGUEST
So we never felt like we were gonna ask to be on that label.
TMT:110 Molly Neuman On Her Journey From Punk Rock To The Board Room
M
55:27Mark SutherlandHOST
Uh, the latest or greatest record that you've bought.
M
55:30Molly NeumanGUEST
The greatest record I ever bought was I... via mail order to Dischord Records, the Rites of Spring self-titled album.
M
55:38Mark SutherlandHOST
Wow.
M
55:40Mark SutherlandHOST
What a record.
129: Sleepytime Trio
D
27:21Drew RingoGUEST
It's a good question.
D
27:22Drew RingoGUEST
Like, I gotta think it probably was Brian Loet, Loet Records, working at Dischord, probably suggested it because it would be cheap.
D
27:30Drew RingoGUEST
Um, and I, that, that, you know, cheap is the wrong...
D
27:32Drew RingoGUEST
Frugal, smart.
Bob Mould
B
12:44Bob MouldGUEST
I mean, you know, you know, Husker Du was one of many bands in the '80s that tried to steer the course of American music in a different direction.
B
12:56Bob MouldGUEST
You know, Minutemen, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, you know what I mean? The Dicks, Big Boys, Naked Raygun, you know, DC, you know, all the, all the Dischord bands, Minor Threat, SOA.
B
13:07Bob MouldGUEST
I mean, there was...
B
13:09Bob MouldGUEST
You know, we were, we were very, very fortunate to be part of that movement, and we, Husker Du, took it in a personal direction when people were really solidly o- on the political part of it.
