Concept2, Inc.
Concept2 is the leading manufacturer of sport-based ergometers, including the RowErg, SkiErg, BikeErg and StrengthErg. The company began in 1976 in the back of a bread truck when Dick and Pete Dreissigacker, fresh from Olympic training, started making composite racing oars. Concept2 oars and sculls have since gone on to become the equipment of choice among the world's rowers. In 1981, Dick and Pete created the Concept2Model A RowErg, which swiftly became the best-selling rowing machine in the world. They introduced a Nordic ski training machine, the SkiErg, in 2009. The Concept2 BikeErg (released 2017) is the latest addition to our family of sport-based ergometers. Since those early days we've grown to over 70 employees in Morrisville, Vermont. We remain dedicated to our philosophy of providing the most innovative products and programs to our customers. We sell factory direct to eliminate the middleman so that we can provide our customers with the best value.www.concept2.com

#442 You Are Recovering From Training That Didn't Even Happen | Dr. Mike T Nelson
M
34:39Mike T. NelsonGUEST
I'd rather throw battery acid in my eyes than watch most of them run.
M
34:43Mike T. NelsonGUEST
So the second best is going to be 2,000 meter on a Concept2 rower.
M
34:48Mike T. NelsonGUEST
There is equations that will translate that for you.
M
34:50Mike T. NelsonGUEST
Again, even if you're not elite level rower, that's fine.
M
34:53Mike T. NelsonGUEST
It'll get you good enough that you'll be in the ballpark.
M
34:56Mike T. NelsonGUEST
Again, we're not looking for, oh, you were 27.8 versus 28.5. We're like, are you really sucky? Are you okay? Are you pretty good? That's all I'm really looking at with that.
M
35:07Mike T. NelsonGUEST
So Concept2 Rower, warm up, rest completely, set it for 2,000 meters, go as hard as you can for 2,000 meters.
M
35:14Mike T. NelsonGUEST
It's going to suck horribly.

They're just so efficient with the movement that they never really get pushed.

But put the same guy on a Concept2 rower or a WAP bike and look at the power output and look at what your heart rate is and look at these things and they're very measurable and there's no place to be efficient in.

It's just hard work.

Sponsorship has been, you know, is getting there, but they've not quite breached the kind of non-endemic sponsors yet.
M
12:49Martin RossHOST
You know, if you look at them, there's Puma, MyProtein, Concept2, Amazfit, Amazfit, don't even know who they are, Blackroll.
M
12:57Martin RossHOST
And, you know, kind of fitness brands, if you like.

So interestingly, Moritz Furtz earlier this year said that 95% of the value for the sponsors was in the mass participation audience, i.e. the people that are there and to sell products to them and not the wider audience, which takes you into the TV point, which is not really a revenue stream at all.

How to Use 85% of Your Muscles Rowing - 25 Minute Follow Along Workout
J
1:24JohnHOST
So let's get our machine set up and I'll talk to you about technique and all that kind of stuff during the row.
J
1:29JohnHOST
So go to resistance, drag factor, whatever you have on your machine, because you don't have to do this on a Concept2.
J
1:34JohnHOST
Just because this is the industry standard doesn't mean you have to use it, all right? Of course, this format is kind of like, there's a reason this is the best thing, because you can get into the right positions, but hey, I'm not here to sell Concept2s.
J
1:44JohnHOST
You want to feel nicely connected to the stroke, but you don't want to tug and heave against it because you've got it set too high.
J
1:50JohnHOST
At the same time, you don't want it so low that you don't really feel connected to it and you're like, am I rowing? Am I here? For the seat, I want you to sit more towards the front of the seat and more towards the front of your backside rather than the back of the seat and the back of the backside.
Get the Basics Right - 25 Minute Rowing Workout | Follow Along
J
2:16JohnHOST
You've heard me talk about stuff, and therefore you've accumulated my kind of witterings in your brain in terms of technique and all that kind of stuff.
J
2:23JohnHOST
But what I'm going to do is I'm going to reset and go from as though this is a totally new idea, sparked off by someone posting on the Concept2 Rowers group on Facebook, Tamara, asking about basically, is there anyone out there that does this kind of thing? So I'm basically making this for her, and just everyone else can watch as well, right? that's what we're gonna do so um hopefully everyone's gonna get something out of this is what i'm saying even if you've heard me whittle away whiffle away for ages um then uh you're still gonna get something out of this all right don't worry don't worry all right that's what i'm saying so let's get into this let's get back into me being a professional kind of coachy type again we'll kind of we'll do this but it's not kind of really just why we're going right into the very basics again today Right, so we are going to do our workout today, but we do have to set up our machines before we can get started.
J
3:04JohnHOST
Now, what I want you to do is go to resistance or drag factor, whatever it is that you have in your machine, and set it so that you feel nicely connected to the stroke.
J
3:12JohnHOST
But you don't have to tug and heave it rather than, well, you don't have to tug and heave it to get it moving, all right? What it says for Concept 2, don't get lost in the lever numbers, okay? So many people get lost in this kind of, oh, I row in five, I row in six, etc.

25 Minute Rowing Workout to Manage Your Energy Better | Row Along With Me
J
19:56JohnHOST
And that low intensity workout that I'm gonna do later will still deplete my sporting fitness, but it won't really touch my life fitness, life energy.
J
20:13JohnHOST
Does that all make sense? Is that a good way to put it? it's all about balance and unfortunately because again this is where the Jaguar thing pays off nicely because we like to go a bit more exciting but quicker it's like woo in a sports car it's really easy to be like I don't want to put it into cruise and just hold a slow pace I want to go fast baby but that's when you end up draining both tanks you're in the middle of the desert or the countryside wherever and you're stranded and that's the equivalent of you waking up one day and going I just can't today all right so the first way to control all of that is to look at your programming and the intensity that you're putting into each row but the second way is technique where efficiency comes from and so the most important thing I put periods between each of those words is to understand that certainly for Concept2 based rowing the machine isn't what controls your pace yes you can make the stroke feel heavier by increasing drag factor lifting your lever up that allows more airflow so that when you put power in the flywheel turns and needs to displace more air but that only happens if you put the power into the machine so I'm rowing at Two minutes, well, between eight and 10 right now.
J
22:48JohnHOST
Putting in just a solid push, but if I hold 20 strokes a minute, right, hang on, hold it, and then push lighter with my legs, I'm still rowing at 20 strokes a minute, but I've suddenly dropped What's that? 25 seconds pace because I wasn't powering into the stroke.
J
23:26JohnHOST
Or if, let's see how this works.
J
27:22JohnHOST
I've even had someone else come along to row on the machine.
J
27:28JohnHOST
Someone kind of stronger than they were.
J
27:32JohnHOST
to row in their Concept2 just to make sure it wasn't the machine at fault, like a calibration issue, which it really is.
J
27:39JohnHOST
It's hardly ever on a Concept2, it's hardly ever the fault of the machine.

H

He pulled a 538 on a Concept 2 rower.

And he's rowing up to 30 hours a week to sustain that.

But, you know, something to think about, boys and girls.
Reset Every Stroke | 25 Min Rowing Workout for Better Technique

Elbows come through your sides rather than straight down.
J
17:13JohnHOST
Definitely my main work in progress right now is trying to get my elbows through and wrists flat I can do it in rows like this when I'm concentrating but when I'm kind of going automatic rowing I don't think I do what I mean by that is when I'm not actually concentrating on technique and so that brings me on to quite nicely and not planned my weekend if you've been across my socials you may have seen how my weekend went from a rowing point of view but I'll talk about it so Friday my plan was to do this row in the morning light weights at lunch nothing too heavy and then six o'clock I was going to come out here to the studio do a warm-up and then re-test my 2k it'd been four weeks since my last offering to the Concept2 gods which was 7.28 for the 2K.
J
18:59JohnHOST
Not a great time, but I had been on holiday, I hadn't been training for 2K, and crucially, it was the first Concept2 2K that I had done since, what I'm gonna say, 2019.
J
19:22JohnHOST
I think at the Welsh Open, that was the last 2K I did in proper anger.
J
19:31JohnHOST
I'd done a few on different machines, but not on a Concept2.
J
19:36JohnHOST
Anyway, so we get to Friday.
J
19:42JohnHOST
Been quite a tough week anyway in terms of lost sleep.
