In comments submitted yesterday, the CAP urged the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to reject proposed cuts to reimbursements for surgical pathology services.

CMS has proposed the changes on the proposed 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.

The CAP argues that the cuts are based on a flawed analysis that doesn't reflect the complexity of pathology services used to diagnose cancer and other serious diseases and will hurt patient care.

It also warns that a hospital must accurately represent which facility and services are covered by its accreditation.

The CAP urged the federal government this week to take a balanced approach to updating CLIA rather than making significant changes.

The CAP was responding to the federal health agency's request for information about the rising use of AI in laboratories, cybersecurity issues, and several other topics.

In the letter, the CAP said pathologists must continue to oversee interpretation of diagnostic tests, with AI assisting and augmenting the pathologist's work but not providing a diagnosis or making decisions about patient care.
