what i I didn't even know too much about HBCUs growing up outside of the ones that were near my hometown, right? So like, Denmark Technical College, Voorhees College, which I think now is Voorhees University.

Claflin University, South Carolina State University.

Those are the ones that's around my hometown, like near my hometown of Barnwell, South Carolina.

And then, of course, the ones that you would see or hear about the most on TV, like Howard.

y'all to understand something.

I was in college, okay? CU, you know? Claflin University.

And...

The hate was already there, y'all.

And being able to create that culture and being able to cultivate that culture, because it's different on a Morgan campus versus a Bowie,

a Claflin,

a Howard, you know, Fayetteville State.

Right.

I mean, there's so much momentum, so much of a ripple effect coming out of this.

I mean, clearly these scholars are doing great, but you're funding roughly a dozen scholars per campus, right? So go back to, you had said that there's sort of a clear change on campus, but what changes on these campuses beyond the scholars themselves? Like, can you think about some examples that you could share of other ways that this is having a broader impact?

This is where the conversation gets a little interesting, Darren, because as we thought about this, if all we accomplish in doing this supporting a defined number of scholars it's meaningful but it's limited and that's that's really what they're it's really not what we wanted the larger opportunity is institutional change which we talked about the whole idea of culture right the whole idea of of being able to influence the culture we talked about the virginia state moving from an honors program to an honors college We talked about the impact that the Claflin University scholars are having on the honors program on their campus.

They have come in and changed the program a bit because of what they're learning at these leadership summits.

This week's interview is with Dr. Robert Green, whose voice you heard up top.

He's an assistant professor of history at Claflin University in South Carolina and the lead instructor for a fascinating social justice institution called the Modjeska Simkins School.

That conversation is coming up.

That's a problem for Republicans in a state where Latinos make up about forty-one percent of the population.

Okay, now it's time for my conversation with Dr. Robert Green.

He's an assistant professor of history at Claflin University.

He is co-editor of the book Invisible No More, The African American Experience at the University of South Carolina.

So nothing official yet, but Buttigieg headlined a fundraiser for first congressional district Democrat nominee Nancy LaCour the Friday evening before he spoke.

He also talked to students at Claflin University, one of the HBCUs in Orangeburg, and then headlined the NYCP Freedom Fund dinner in Orangeburg that evening on Saturday.

So I asked Buttigieg what message Democrats need to be unified on in contrast to Republicans calling them all socialists and communists.

The good news is all Democrats have to do is remind voters that most of them already agree with us on the big issues and disagree with Republicans.
