There, there is a famous interpretation though that I read about that I think I do ultimately subscribe to.

There's actually a whole letter to the editor that you can read from a film fan, Paola Lortie, in 1990 wrote to the Chicago Reader, and this interpretation's famous enough that it's been passed on.

It's now, like, one of the top reviews on Letterboxd.

Long story short, she says that the scene that clued her in to how she interpreted the film is the bathtub scene where we're watching from Kay's perspective as Sweetie bathes her father.
