Buffalo Bill Center of the West

Buffalo Bill Center of the West

Explore the saga that is the real West in our five, family-friendly museums: Draper Natural History Museum, Buffalo Bill Museum, Plains Indian Museum, Whitney Western Art Museum, and Cody Firearms Museum. Only the Buffalo Bill Center of the West—formerly the Buffalo Bill Historical Center—shares the epic stories of Yellowstone and the American West together in one place, for one price. That makes us uniquely qualified to tell the stories of the American West like no other museum can. With our galleries, exhibitions, programs, and kid-approved activities, your whole family is sure to exclaim, “I found my true West!” The Center is located in the authentic western town of Cody, founded by our namesake, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody. We’re also located in the heart of the Greater Yellowstone region—just outside Yellowstone National Park’s East Gate. So we’re surrounded by the majesty of the Rockies and are privy to the history and myths of the Old West, the vibrant life of the New West, and the living cultures of Plains Indian peoples.www.centerofthewest.org

I had Rebecca West, who is the executive director and CEO of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

And she's such a lovely person.

I really enjoyed listening to her and her story and how she became the director, which is really quite amazing unto itself, because she's been at the museum for like 34 years and started doing just a unpaid catalog resume with Peter Hassrick on Frederick Remington, worked her way through for something like 11 years as curator, and then continued through the latter until she became the executive director CEO, which was in 2021.

I have Rebecca West here, and you are the executive director and CEO, right, of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

Is that correct? I sure am.

Other stories in the Cowboy State Daily that I'm interested in reading today is Renee Jean's story about the Buffalo Bill Center confirming it does have a rare 1804 Lewis and Clark Expedition piece metal.

Peace medals, if you didn't know, back in the 17 and 1800s were pretty much a regular thing.

Nations would gift other nations a peace medal as a way of saying there's going to be peace between our two great nations.

Now, this data is able to calculate the exact percentages of silver, copper, and other trace metals, and to make sure that those are the same trace elements that would have been used in the Philadelphia Mint in 1801.

And what these latest experiment or these latest x-rays have found is, yes, indeed, the Buffalo Bill Center does have Not one, but two rare medals that can be traced to the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Other peace medals have been found, but they they're not tied to Lewis and Clark.
