I relate to those, even though I'm not a huge churchgoer or anything, but I do respond to those moments in the human story that are difficult to explain.

And I had the idea that I would use my friends And I had all of the guys come in for the sittings, obviously.

But also, during the exhibition in Venice and subsequently, there was a sound landscape, as it were, or soundscape.

And so what I said to each one, they came into my studio, and just like you and me here, I had them set up with a microphone.

That's what helped me, actually, when I was down in the dumps, just spend a lot of time in museums and art galleries.

And also I would say not to judge yourself or others too much because we're all failures in some areas and learn that the hard way.

Just before we go, I have a couple of comments from friends of yours.

The first one is, meeting Paul Benny some years ago was one of my most happy surprises.

And you've now got sort of getting on for three decades of having seen this misery.

And you know what I love about you Lindsay is you lead this life of contrast because I'll see you, you know we're joined friends with Bella Freud who was on this podcast recently, I'll see you at a party at her shop in Marylebone or I'll see you at Babington House, the Soho House Hotel and yet you'll be going from there to Darfur and it's a life of contrast isn't it?

I think when I first started covering war, I, you know, I think Iraq was really the first big war I covered of like combat.
