I'm continually amazed at the things that you can find in DNS.

The number of malformed queries that I used to see looking in the APNIC feeds, people would be doing reverse address lookup, but they'd have misconfigured things and they'd be appending an entire forward domain lumped on the back of the inadra.arpa I'd see people doing lookups for ULA addresses that were never meant to leave the host, but they were basically telling me the prefix they were using inside their local site deployment.

You see some truly amazing things in the DNS.

This time, I'm talking again to Geoff Huston from APNIC Labs in his regular monthly spot on Ping.

Geoff and I discussed data centers, not their routing architecture or the issues in data transport, but the economics and the social costs of a decision to aggressively deploy artificial intelligence.
G

By its very nature, the large language models and generative pre-trained transformers of AI, that's the LLM and GPT systems, demand massive investment in computing systems to perform their data analysis and construct the models which are applied to the problems we give them.

But then when I moved to APNIC, I worked a lot with capacity building trainings, outreach, building relationships with other organizations in the region.

And I was like, okay, where is the mouse? But I think, and it was funny because if someone had done that to me now, I would have gone like, what the hell? But I think at the time I was like, okay, fine, I'll learn it.
N
33:56Nurani NimpunoGUEST
So, and I think that also helped so much for the later technical stuff, because if you understand the structures of that, that, you know, follows through and everything else.
N
34:07Nurani NimpunoGUEST
And I had to learn some DNS when I was at Pryp and Sissy and APNIC, but still, like, the amount of tech that I was like, I had to absorb when I worked in that node was, yeah, it was crazy.
