So I want to ask, why not? Why don't they belong in the same conversation?

Well, in those two chapters, I am responding to the presenter who talked about race, sex, and gender at the conference on Adventist identity at Andrews University in the fall of... of 2022 and at that conference they lumped it together and I had concerns about that because each topic is so big so it's the magnitude of the topic that is in some ways a reason for my my objection and then I also thought that there was a strategy in doing that so the person who presents can admit that we were wrong in relation to race, but we are not wrong in relation to sex and gender.

But mostly my reservations had to do with the magnitude of the topic.

Now, having said that, there is in the racial history, and we are talking quite recent history here in the U.S., there was an appeal to nature, that the racial disparities, that enslavement itself of African Americans happened in conformity to the laws of nature.

And racism was entrenched and very deep.

And even growing up in our egalitarian home where we were articulate and intentional about racial equality, my thinking was still reflexively still very black and white because I did not have the opportunity to be in a racially mixed company most of the time.

And so in 2001, I took a position at the beautifully diverse campus of Andrews University, partly because I wanted to become completely immersed and comfortable living with God's children of all colors, ethnicities, nationalities, and so on.

And I wanted to learn to be a white person who did not assume that I was the dominant one in the room.
