How you doing? Do you remember as a kid growing up, I didn't know much about Australia, but there was like a beer commercial.

And it was Amstel.

That's what it was.

And it was like, Amstel light.

A beer drink is light beer.

Or something like that.

But here in South Africa, it's a pretty different picture.

So on Wednesday, Heineken, which owns brands like Amstel and Bernini, reported double-digit growth in its local beer and ready-to-drink volumes during the third quarter.

Then, just a day later, AB&Bev, the company behind SAB, announced that it had sold more beer and beverages in South Africa than in any previous third quarter.

And that is despite its global beer volumes actually declining slightly.

So that began the whole process.

So when you get to the Beaches Jazz Festival, you know, that was the thing where I had the radio show, the Jazz Report, uh, radio network all across the country, and the guy, Bruce Davidson, who was, uh, producing it with me, he had that Amstel beer account.

Um, he had been in advertising, but he had an Amstel beer account that he was looking at for Vickers and Benson, and they said, uh, "We would like to do a jazz festival like this new one, the, the, uh, DuMourier Jazz Festival."

Right.

"Can you find a place?" So I got on my bike and I started riding everywhere on the lake, and I ended up in Kew Gardens.

And I saw Kew Gardens, and they had a little wooden platform that on the weekend the Toronto Musicians Union had this little trust fund, paid you $60 a musician, and they put a little jazz in the park or something.

And I went back and I told Bruce, I says, "This is it." So Bruce came down and he saw it.

He goes, "This is it." So the next thing is he goes, "We gotta get Amstel beer in the, in the bars." So Amstel rep is going out, and he goes into Lido's on the beach-

I don't mind Amstel.

Nah, it's decent, yeah.

See, I don't like it over here, but it's boss when you pay a euro for it in Benidorm.
