American College of Emergency Physicians

Gosh, and you said it, Alok, the problem, you know, is happening here as well, not just in the UK.

An American College of Emergency Physicians poll of more than 2,700 emergency physicians found that of those, 66% had been physically assaulted in the past year.

More than a third said it happened more than once.

And 85% said violence in emergency departments appeared to be increasing.

Now, with medical legal cases, about 85 or 90% do go for the defense.

In the words of Greg Henry, who was the past president of ACEP, who did a lot of medical legal work, and he's one of the co-authors on the "Bounce Back" books, and he said, "In a medical legal action, there are no winners.

You have one loser and a bigger loser," because it's almost four years from the time from when you see the patient until that trial ends, of the few, about 7% approximately, that end up going to trial.

So there are no winners.

And then finally, and I alluded to it briefly earlier, but standard of care is not the same thing as the patient's outcome.

In other words, because we didn't make the correct diagnosis doesn't mean that we deviated from the standard of care.

So for example, ACEP, American College of Emergency Physicians, in the 2018 clinical practice guidelines says that for patients with a non-STEMI potential acute coronary syndrome, that we do now have a one or 2% acceptable miss rate.

And I love how they do this, but they say in the actual document that trying to get lower than that will cause patient harm from false positive testing.

It also got some pushback.

So the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the American College of Radiology argued that your article is flawed.

They are not, representatives of those organizations are not here to defend themselves, but you are.

So I was curious, do you have any response to to their response?

He's a board-certified emergency medicine doctor.

He was elected as a fellow by the American College of Emergency Physicians, and he's recognized for significant contributions to emergency medicine, leadership, and clinical evidence.

He's also the founder and CEO of FirmTech.

That's a company advancing sexual and cardiovascular health through smart, wearable technology.

So I figured that out and Wasn't sure exactly what I was going to do about it.

But while I was still there, the senior VP of membership position at the American College of Emergency Physicians, which is here in Dallas, happened to be open.

And so I just said, I'll throw my name in the hat and see what happens.

And it worked out.

My professional path has included, as you've mentioned, hematology, oncology, and emergency medicine.

I have been actively involved throughout my career, including all types of advocacy, including service as president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, on committees of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American College of Emergency Physicians, and currently honored to be chair-elect on the American Medical Association, or AMA, Board of Trustees.
