That's kind of a hot take here, but the reason is Amazon had bought the warehouse robotics pioneer called Kiva Systems in 2012. and then amazon stopped selling the kiva systems to outside customers so the two founders they discussed this reportedly while commuting to ge healthcare and they were thinking so if amazon thinks warehouse robotics is so valuable that they want to keep it to themselves well there must be a huge market obviously they didn't want to explicitly copy kiva systems because the keeper robots mainly moved shelves horizontally but the idea for exotec was what if the robot itself could also climb vertically so this lets you take advantage of the height of a warehouse rather than limiting the storage to shelves that need to be transported on the floor level right And they built a prototype.
