Grant McKenzieGUEST

And I met a load of people and I was talking to people, finding out how they're kind of coping and what it's like.
Grant McKenzieGUEST
9:26
being a carer.
Grant McKenzieGUEST
9:28
And the very first couple that I met actually there were the parents of the CEO of an Age UK charity, a local Age UK charity.
Grant McKenzieGUEST
9:42
So, yeah, there's some divine intervention there, I think.
Lucy StandingGUEST
32:29
And then we repeated it again this year.
Lucy StandingGUEST
32:31
So this year we had 120 organisations at the Law Society partnered with the CEO from Age UK, got people to write a couple of pledges of what they're going to do.
Lucy StandingGUEST
32:41
And we are following up on each of those people.
Lucy StandingGUEST
32:43
How are you doing with your pledge? So it's a slow, slow, slow burn, but it does yield some results.
Steve WraithHOST
18:33
And you know what? Sitting here talking about Newcastle United.
Steve WraithHOST
18:37
um and chatting to me mates is is has been a tonic for me as well and you know you guys in the chat as well keeping me you know keeping me going with the questions and and keeping our uh regular guests going with with the questions is great i think the big thing as well for me with this is that we have raised you know best part of 35 million pound for charity 35 million 35 000 pound for charity um in six years and i think you know the the money that we raised for the food bank was amazing um in lockdown it was much needed but then to move to to the dementia charities to do it for dementia matters and raise just short of just over five grand for them and then in the first two years of us raising money for age uk north townside dementia uh we're you know we're probably going to hit around about 20 grand for them in that first period so in them first two years and and that's you know yes i i organize the events yes i push the the t-shirts or i push the auction items or whatever but at the end of the day it's you and your hard-earned cash that you are putting towards something which desperately needs help in the northeast so that is the motivation that really is the motivation for me um and yeah yeah and it's people like yourself you know you you all chip in you all do your bit and you know some of you live too far away to come to the events but some of you come to every event and That's the key.
Steve WraithHOST
19:54
And, you know, for me to do these events that we're doing, the two we've got coming up, I still have to pay the bills.
Steve WraithHOST
20:00
If that event doesn't go according to plan, if we don't sell the tickets, then I'm the one who gets stuck with the bill because it's me who's decided to put it on.
T.A. ShilanoHOST

We do indeed, Rich.

We've been sort of focusing on the Age UK's Act Now, Age Better campaign this season, and I'm delighted to say that we are joined by Age UK's Chief Executive Officer, Paul Farmer.

Paul FarmerGUEST
1:09
Yeah, so first of all, thanks very much for having me on and thanks for promoting the campaign.
Mike WaddingtonHOST
0:19
So I thought, I bet Sheridan knows something about this.
Sheridan RocherGUEST
0:21
It's really interesting because you passed me a booklet written by Age UK, which is a national charity, and it's called Feeling Lonely, based on their conversations with older adults, with carers and peer review groups and things.
Sheridan RocherGUEST
0:34
And I just thought it was a really good booklet.
Sheridan RocherGUEST
0:36
And I thought it's just helpful if we maybe highlight some of the things in there.
Sheridan RocherGUEST
2:33
You've got all these feelings.
Sheridan RocherGUEST
2:34
Or there are helplines out there.
Sheridan RocherGUEST
2:37
Age UK has a silver line, which is you can ring them 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Mike WaddingtonHOST
2:44
Do you think people sometimes don't realise they're lonely?
speaker_4UNKNOWN
20:38
hmm
George FieldingGUEST
20:41
I would point them towards what Caroline from Age UK said when she was giving evidence.
George FieldingGUEST
20:48
Age UK have a helpline.
George FieldingGUEST
20:50
And a week after this was passed in the Commons, because older people may not...
George FieldingGUEST
20:58
I mean, who does understand our parliamentary system? A week afterwards, they had people calling their hotline, their helpline, wanting this and asking for it.
Megan SeymourGUEST
20:21
We were using systems that already existed.
Megan SeymourGUEST
20:24
But I really wanted to focus on patients that sort of maybe were housebound as well, so we worked with Age UK and with carers who provide medication support in patient homes, um, to be able to deliver their messages into the homes because they might be the only contacts that person has.
Megan SeymourGUEST
20:42
And so that way they can identify people that they can see might have the problem and just pass on their messages to start having conversations.
Megan SeymourGUEST
20:49
And then sort of helped make more of an agreement between the carers and community pharmacy in terms of returns and just helping with any sort of frictions where they might struggle when trying to support a patient.
