Advancement Via Individual Determination

That took you with you, that, that took you with them to places that you thought only existed on television, and I really wanted to pursue that because in high school, I didn't really know if I had a passion.

I remember, you know, being in my sophomore year, in my junior year, being in this course called AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, it's a college readiness program, and our teacher asking us, like, "Hey," like, "what's one thing you're passionate about?" And I was pretty worried that I didn't have a passion.

I was like, "Man, like, I like a lot of things," but, you know, there was this one kid that was so passionate about yo-yos, and I remember, I was like, "Man, I'm not passionate about anything like that guy." And I found a way to blend my multiple passions into one.

And so the first thing was learning, okay, I would wanna do something, if I can do anything, I wanna do something that the city doesn't really allow me to do, and it's spend time in nature.

Holly asks, I've been hearing a bit about AVID strategies in PE lately, but I'm not all that familiar with them.

What is AVID, and what would it look like if I brought those strategies into my program? How would my students benefit?

I've been teaching for 29 years.

And when I left my previous district after 21 years, I've been in the Sun Prairie School District, which Sun Prairie is an avid district.

All teachers in our building use the same AVID strategies.
