Our guest has just co-authored with colleagues from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Strathclyde a piece for the Academy of Social Sciences asking what a Burnham Premiership means for Scottish regional development.

It's a pleasure to welcome David Waite, Urban Studies Lecturer at the University of Glasgow to LED Confidential.

David's research focus is second tier city region economies, and he's been following the local and regional policy steps and recently led work looking at next steps for city region and regional policy in Scotland.

So Westminster itself has a real question of where it puts its efforts in terms of strengthening collaboration with the three national governments and strengthening collaboration with enabling cities and regions to achieve their full potential.

I mean, how should Westminster actually deal with that issue in Scotland?

Broadly in the piece that you referred to in your opening dialogue, David, you referred to our Academy of Social Sciences piece and our sort of point there, and this is with our colleague James Mitchell too at Edinburgh, we made the point that we've got to consider seriously how you work across this multi-level governance system.

Because of course, when the, sorry, I forget the term, but the Council of Nations and Regions was set up and it met in Edinburgh, I think last year, there was obviously complaints by some Scottish leaders that they weren't in those discussions.

And, you know, in a way, you know, we social scientists have to grapple with new data sources and what they tell us and how to use them.
